About the Role
The Deputy General Director plays a central role at MSF Canada, ensuring strategy translates into concrete actions across all departments while maintaining organizational health, accountability, and cross-functional cohesion necessary for MSF Canada's work. This position links leadership, operations, risk management, and governance, strengthening the General Director's capacity and enabling the organization to function with clarity and purpose. Internally and externally, this role enhances MSF Canada's credibility as a well-managed organization true to its mandate.
Responsibilities
- Lead daily operations, fostering organizational efficiency by driving the planning and accountability cycle.
- Manage senior-level frameworks, overseeing Finance & Administration, IT, HR, and Strategy & Planning departments.
- Strengthen team capabilities through professional coaching, accountability, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Oversee risk management and compliance, ensuring organizational preparedness for critical incidents.
- Manage the risk register, monitor, and mitigate risks related to legal obligations and data protection.
- Ensure compliance within Finance, HR, and IT departments, including data protection, legal obligations, and record-keeping.
- Lead the response to operational risks within established thresholds.
- Act as a strategic partner to the General Director, aligning internal operations with external or movement-related priorities.
- Provide operational perspective for governance reporting, board engagement, and organizational vitality monitoring.
- Ensure the General Director has a clear view of cultural signals, safeguarding trends, risks, and performance.
- Support the General Director in representing MSF Canada internally and externally.
- Prepare the organization for interactions with the movement and the public.
- Build connections between internal teams, the Association, and governance bodies to enhance cohesion, credibility, and networks.
Requirements
- High proficiency in French and English, both written and spoken.
- Sincere interest in, and understanding of, MSF's humanitarian principles and social work.
- Cultural humility, a sense of equity, and the ability to embody inclusive leadership in a diverse organization.
- Proven experience in high-level leadership within a complex organization with multiple stakeholders (non-profit, humanitarian, or similar context).
- Demonstrated experience managing cross-functional teams and direct reports at the senior executive level.
- Ability to lead and develop high-performing teams using a coaching and accountability-focused approach.
- Extensive experience in coordinating across departments and fostering organization-wide collaboration.
- Comfortable assuming both strategic and operational responsibilities simultaneously.
- Strong organizational and process management skills, with experience in managing planning and reporting cycles.
- Ability to identify, assess, and mitigate organizational risks.
- Knowledge of financial oversight, IT governance, and/or legal and compliance functions.
- Skill in communicating effectively both internally with leadership and externally with the public, as needed.
