About the Role

Santander UK is seeking a Legal Counsel to join the Operations & Infrastructure Legal team. This role provides legal advice on a wide range of agreements supporting the bank's operations and infrastructure, including drafting, negotiating, and advising on contracts for outsourced services, consultancy, marketing, intra-group arrangements, and strategic projects. You will also advise on regulatory regimes applicable to service provision for a ring-fenced bank in the UK.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert, accurate, concise, commercial, and cost-effective legal advice that is readily understandable to non-lawyers and facilitates business decisions.
  • Demonstrate creativity and innovation in finding practical solutions to complex subject matters and challenge appropriately to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Share technical skills, experience, and best practices with colleagues and the wider business.
  • Support other departments through training and the development of legal templates and checklists.
  • Stay informed about legal and financial services industry developments to ensure Santander UK's compliance and best practices.
  • Continuously seek to improve processes, practices, and policies.
  • Answer legal queries from internal customers.
  • Manage external suppliers and stakeholders to deliver advice, projects, and outcomes on time.

Requirements

  • Experience providing legal advice that is readily understandable to non-lawyers.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of outsourcing, complex commercial contracts, and commercial contract law.
  • Excellent knowledge of the regulatory regime impacting outsourcing and material arrangements in financial services, such as the Prudential Regulation Authority’s (PRA) Supervisory Statement on Outsourcing and Third Party Risk Management (SS2/21).
  • Good understanding and working knowledge of data protection issues applicable to contracts involving sharing or processing of personal data.
  • Ability to manage and influence stakeholders.
  • Experience dealing with a large volume of matters and competing demands.
  • Excellent project management skills, with an ability to manage multiple, conflicting interests and deadlines.
  • Right to work in the UK.
