About the Role
The Senior Counselor is a leadership position responsible for the oversight of the health, wellness, and care of youth in the community residence. This role ensures quality childcare services are delivered according to agency policy and regulations, focusing on staff development and service quality for residents. The Senior Counselor contributes to a high-performance culture by embodying agency values and delivering quality results.
Responsibilities
- Provides overall oversight to the residential program and supervision of staff in the care of youth.
- Guided by organizational values and trauma-informed practice in all interactions.
- Treats all children, families, staff, and ancillary providers with respect and courtesy.
- Demonstrates and models sensitivity to the cultural background of children, families, and co-workers.
- Ensures job-related activities follow agency policies, regulations, and ethical standards.
- Requires daily interaction with staff and clients, ensuring services are delivered in accordance with the operating modality, treatment plan, calendars, and schedules.
- Assists in providing staff and resident counseling and support in crisis situations, including post-crisis response.
- Provides individualized care and supervision of each resident.
- Models positive behaviors and implements core values.
- Assesses, instructs, and measures daily and independent living skills.
- Participates in the service planning and review process.
- Accompanies, supervises, and provides transportation for appointments, home visits, sibling visits, and activities.
- Ensures adherence to mediation regimen.
- Reports incidents, occurrences, or untoward events to the supervisor promptly and completes appropriate agency paperwork.
- Assists in coaching, training, and evaluation of staff as requested and assigned.
- Directly supervises and provides coaching of Residential Counselors.
- Ensures all documentation per shift is adequate and completed in a timely fashion.
- Conducts monthly fire drills and completes appropriate paperwork, ensuring residents are aware of the fire escape route and staging plan.
- Completes administrative tasks as assigned.
- Assists in ensuring adequate staff coverage is scheduled for the residential program and assumes RC responsibilities when no RC coverage is available.
- Ensures, completes, and maintains client records and program documentation according to program and regulatory standards.
- Assures all documentation is completed in a timely fashion.
- Consistently attends staff meetings and provides leadership, agenda, and coaching during team/staff meetings.
- Participates in all strategic planning goals, including risk management and Quality Assurance plans.
- Assists in the research and development of best practices and new initiatives.
- Maintains timely compliance with all established agency standards and provides support documents as necessary.
- Contributes to training of Community Residence staff and participates in agency-wide training.
- Required to safely travel on agency business, maintaining accurate mileage documentation.
- Consistently attends mandated agency and department meetings and participates on standing agency committees and community committees as assigned.
- Represents the agency at state and local forums, developing collaborative relations with other stakeholders.
- Performs other responsibilities as assigned by the Residential Program Manager.
Requirements
- Must have a valid driver’s license and driving record in accordance with agency standards.
- 2+ years direct experience working with children and families in residential care, counseling, or group care required.
- Supervisory/management experience preferred.
- Handle confidential information appropriately.
- Perform at a high level of autonomy, with minimal supervision.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Utilize computer and standard Microsoft Office, and learn new computer programming.
- Work on multiple tasks, while maintaining a high attention to detail, accuracy, and quality.
- Commit to effectively and efficiently providing high levels of customer satisfaction with positive service delivery results.
- Interact effectively with individuals/families from diverse backgrounds.
- Set appropriate limits and boundaries with clients; act decisively to protect clients when necessary.
