About the Role

Legal Engineers sit at the heart of our Innovation & AI agenda, designing and building AI-powered workflows to enhance lawyer efficiency and output quality. This multidisciplinary role combines legal practice, AI engineering, and product thinking to embed AI into everyday legal work within the Firm's Applied AI Lab, a unit focused on experimenting with and shipping AI solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build AI-powered workflows to help lawyers work faster, more consistently, and at higher quality.
  • Decompose complex legal processes into discrete, measurable tasks executable by AI.
  • Re-engineer existing manual legal workflows for AI-first execution, identifying optimal AI integration points and human judgment roles.
  • Translate tacit legal knowledge into structured artefacts like prompts, schemas, and decision trees for AI systems.
  • Own prompt engineering standards, schema specifications, and quality assurance protocols for AI outputs.
  • Curate exemplar matters and precedents into reference packs to improve AI outputs.
  • Design evaluation frameworks to rigorously measure AI tool performance.
  • Track AI tool performance using data to drive iteration and make recommendations.
  • Contribute to the strategic direction and roadmap of the Applied AI Lab.
  • Identify high-impact use cases and drive adoption of AI-powered solutions.
  • Act as a bridge between legal practice, technology, and product disciplines.
  • Support the Applied AI Lab's needs, contributing beyond formal job description.
  • Collaborate with lawyers, technologists, and external partners to identify and shape AI use cases.
  • Ensure AI solutions are grounded in practice needs and integrated into existing workflows.
  • Communicate clearly with diverse stakeholders, including partners, product engineers, and clients.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with rigor and discretion.
  • Stay informed about developments in generative AI, large language models, and prompt engineering techniques.
  • Maintain an informed perspective on how legal teams work and where AI fits.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as needed for global projects.

Requirements

  • At least three years of experience in legal practice, legal technology, management consulting, or a technical role supporting legal or professional services workflows.
  • Demonstrated experience in experimenting with new AI tools and engaging in technical conversations about prompts, schemas, and model behavior.
  • Strong ability to transform ambiguous processes into structured, repeatable, and measurable systems.
  • Ability to translate between legal and engineering perspectives.
  • Solid understanding of how legal teams operate across different practice areas.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proven ability to be proactive and self-directed in a fast-paced, experimental environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams.
  • Genuine curiosity about the future of AI and law, including agentic systems and multimodal capabilities.
  • Sound judgment and intellectual honesty, including the ability to assess AI output quality.
