About the Role

The Rippling Payroll Calculations team is responsible for accurately calculating every component of a paycheck for employees worldwide. As the Engineering Manager, you will lead a critical migration to support global expansion and build the future of Rippling’s most impactful product. You will execute under pressure, manage complex migrations, and motivate a team to build the foundation for future growth, tackling complex algorithmic challenges with massive real-world impact.

Responsibilities

Own the delivery of a critical migration to move all US payroll customers onto our global payroll framework.
Manage the roadmap, clear obstacles, and drive the project to completion against a high-priority deadline.
Own a critical engine that can significantly accelerate company growth.
Guide a team of engineers through a period of high operational load, managing on-call escalations, incidents, and support while maintaining team morale.
Grow and mentor a high-performing team, including hiring and career development.
Foster a culture of ownership, technical excellence, and resilience.
Partner with Product Management to define the long-term roadmap.
Shift focus to clearing the feature backlog and building capabilities for larger up-market deals post-migration.
Lead the team in reshaping the codebase for the future.
Make strategic decisions on refactoring legacy systems and building scalable, extensible architecture.
Serve as the key technical leader for US payroll.
Educate and influence cross-functional teams and stakeholders to solve problems of scale related to code, process, and product.

Requirements

6+ years of professional software engineering experience.
2+ years in an engineering management role leading backend or platform teams.
Strong technical background in building and maintaining large-scale, distributed systems.
Comfortable guiding technical discussions, contributing to architecture, and managing technical debt.
Track record of leading and motivating a team to deliver complex, high-pressure projects on a timeline.
Experience managing competing priorities, on-call escalations, and incidents.
Ability to keep a team motivated and focused during challenging periods.
Keen product sense and ability to partner closely with product managers.
Ability to balance short-term execution with long-term strategic goals.
