About the Role

Rippling is seeking an Engineering Manager (M7) to lead the Time Off and Leave Management team. This role involves high-stakes product execution and deep systems engineering, focusing on building and scaling a configurable leave management system that supports diverse policies, accrual models, approval workflows, and regulatory requirements globally. The system must handle simple PTO tracking to complex extended leave scenarios, integrating with payroll, benefits, and workforce systems. The role also includes driving an architectural evolution from policy-based logic to flexible, reusable primitives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a full-stack team of 8+ engineers to deliver against a high-priority roadmap.
  • Balance near-term product needs with long-term platform investments.
  • Build systems that manage leave policies, accruals, balances, approval workflows, and holiday calendars.
  • Ensure correctness, flexibility, and a seamless user experience for leave management.
  • Develop scalable solutions for nuanced scenarios like extended leave (parental, medical, unpaid).
  • Manage the downstream impact of leave on payroll, benefits, and system access.
  • Evolve the system into a flexible, primitive-based engine for diverse requirements.
  • Raise the bar on engineering and leadership excellence.
  • Strengthen technical rigor and improve operational processes.
  • Mentor senior engineers.
  • Partner closely with a Staff Engineer to drive long-term technical vision.
  • Collaborate with Product and partner teams for seamless integration with payroll, benefits, compliance, and core platform systems.
  • Leverage internal AI capabilities for automation and intelligence in leave management.
  • Own the reliability, performance, and scalability of the leave management system.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience.
  • 2–4+ years in an engineering management role.
  • Experience in a high-growth environment is ideal.
  • Strong technical foundation with the ability to lead system design for distributed systems.
  • Ability to engage deeply in architectural decisions.
  • Experience working in domains with high correctness requirements and complex business logic (e.g., Fintech, HR Tech, Payroll, or Workforce Management) is highly preferred.
  • Comfortable operating in fast-paced environments with evolving requirements.
  • Ability to make pragmatic tradeoffs between speed and long-term scalability.
  • Demonstrated success in hiring, developing, and retaining senior engineers.
  • Experience fostering a culture of accountability and high performance.
