About the Role

The Youth Development & LGBTQ Program Specialist will assist in creating and implementing youth development and LGBTQ programming initiatives across various sites, including crisis shelter, transitional housing, and permanent housing programs. This role focuses on developing trusting relationships with adolescents and young adults, creating social and recreational activities, and life skills workshops. A significant portion of the role involves supporting LGBTQ initiatives to foster an affirming community for LGBTQ youth of color experiencing homelessness. Flexibility, proactivity, and occasional evening/weekend work are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Youth Development Team to plan, implement, and evaluate life skills programming.
  • Develop and coordinate agency-wide events and workshops with the Youth Development Team and Volunteer Partners.
  • Manage CHNY’s Restorative Justice Practice.
  • Assist in managing CHNY’s LGBTQ initiatives, including convening the Gender and Sexuality Alliance, organizing Pride Month activities, and strengthening partnerships with LGBTQ-Affirming Non-Profits.
  • Facilitate New Resident Orientation.
  • Coordinate and manage the agency-wide youth events calendar.
  • Promote programs to ensure resident awareness and motivation for participation.
  • Identify and introduce new activities to meet youth needs.
  • Provide staff coverage for scheduled nightly program activities.
  • Comply with relevant policies and procedures.
  • De-escalate conflicts among clients through non-violent intervention.
  • Instruct and demonstrate Covenant House’s Mission and 5 Principles to youth.
  • Attend meetings and participate in committees as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • 2 years of Youth Development experience required.
  • Experience in providing program support for a childcare non-profit organization preferred.
  • Bilingual is a plus.
  • Flexible schedule required; ability to work evenings and weekends required.
