About the Role
This role serves as the first point of contact, ensuring a positive experience for patients and visitors. It involves gathering essential patient information for billing, verifying insurance, coordinating payments, and addressing patient inquiries to enhance their healthcare journey.
Responsibilities
- Interview patients and/or their representatives to obtain complete and accurate demographic, financial, and insurance information.
- Conduct screening of patients for pre-certification requirements and provider service eligibility.
- Obtain all necessary customer consents and attestations.
- Coordinate the collection of estimated patient liabilities, including co-payments and deductibles.
- Verify insurance benefits and coverage for inpatients and outpatients.
- Respond to customer requests and answer questions regarding service and account information.
- Analyze and rectify customer concerns using established procedures.
- Use computer systems to access and update customer records.
- Verify and post transactions.
- Sort and file various documents.
- Assist with general hospital information and directions.
- Establish financial arrangements to reduce financial risk for the health system.
- Receive requests for reservations (patient scheduling) from physicians' offices and make necessary pre-admission arrangements.
- Enter all patient information into the registration system.
- Obtain all necessary signatures and be knowledgeable regarding special forms required by third-party payers.
- Read physicians' orders to determine requested procedures and instruct patients accordingly.
- Escort or arrange for patients to be escorted to procedure areas and assigned rooms.
- Make corrections and updates to patient account information in the computer.
- Obtain new medical record numbers for newborn admissions and other new patients.
- Document thorough explanatory notes on patient accounts concerning non-routine circumstances.
- Maintain a working knowledge of available information system capabilities and perform required system applications.
- Understand and apply health system philosophy, objectives, and policies related to assigned duties.
- Understand the admission, outpatient, and emergency registration process.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with policy and HIPAA regulations.
- Organize work, recognize and establish appropriate work priorities, and complete work productively.
- Maintain proficiency in data entry skills.
- Assist physicians and their office staff to expedite scheduling, pre-admission, Medicaid screening, and pre-certifications.
- Resolve errors and applicable Claim, DNB, and Patient WorkQueues.
- Greet all guests with a positive and professional attitude.
- Receive patients' valuables for safekeeping in the hospital safe.
- Answer incoming phone calls and follow through with requests.
- Maintain courteous and cooperative working relationships with management, patients, physicians, and the general public.

- Attempt to collect estimated self-pay balances for all inpatient, outpatient, and ER accounts.
- Monitor in-house accounts and attempt to make financial arrangements for payment of self-pay balances.
- Complete financial evaluation forms to document guarantors' income, expenses, assets, and liabilities.
- Identify patients without adequate insurance coverage and determine potential eligibility for financial assistance programs.
- Maintain a list of healthcare financial assistance programs and their eligibility requirements.
- Refer patients/guarantors to sources of outside funding assistance as needed.
- Work efficiently and accurately within designated time frames to ensure continuity of information and cash flow.
- Contact scheduled patients at home to obtain pre-admission information, explain financial policies, and estimate self-pay balances.
- Interview inpatients and select outpatients at time of registration to verify insurance and financial information.
- Document concise and understandable notes regarding all self-pay account collection activity.
- Coordinate financial counseling activities with relevant departments.
- Verify insurance coverage and benefits.
- Exceed monthly quotas on a consistent basis.
- Formally report results of self-pay collection activity to supervisor.
- Provide feedback to management concerning self-pay collection and data integrity issues.
- Complete appropriate error/issues in WorkQueues.
- Identify and resolve Payor Denials.
- Observe work hours and provide proper notice of absences, tardies, and work schedule changes.
- Attend departmental meetings as requested.
- Complete mandatory training as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Comply with all health system policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Requirements
- Minimum 1 year in healthcare, or institutional (corporate) work setting.
- Patient Access Services (PAS) Operations Onboarding Training with a minimum passing score on the final exam within 45 days of hire.
