About the Role

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will be a senior member of the Technology team, initially focused on supporting and enhancing the Banking platform. You will contribute to reliable, secure, and maintainable backend services in a high-availability financial services environment, with a particular focus on Kotlin and/or Java, Spring Boot, AWS, and SQL-based systems. The role will also provide opportunities to contribute to Tyro's Accounting platform and integration initiatives.

Responsibilities

Support, maintain, and enhance backend services for Tyro’s Banking platform, including legacy platform maintenance, security vulnerability remediation, reporting, and service improvements.
Build and operate reliable services in AWS, with practical experience across containers and services such as ECS, EKS, and related cloud infrastructure.
Work with MySQL and SQL-based data stores to support reporting, platform enhancements, troubleshooting, and production support activities.
Identify, assess, and remediate software, operational, and security risks, especially within regulated or high-availability production environments.
Collaborate closely with product, operations, risk, compliance, and engineering stakeholders to translate requirements into pragmatic technical solutions.
Contribute to integration initiatives between the Banking and Accounting platforms, including APIs, shared capabilities, and new product features such as Payroll.
Mentor and support other engineers through code reviews, technical discussion, and constructive feedback, helping maintain a strong engineering culture.
Focus on leveraging AI to be more efficient and incorporate this into your daily work rhythm.

Requirements

Senior-level backend engineering experience, preferably 5+ years in production software engineering roles.
Strong Kotlin and/or Java development expertise, with solid Spring Boot and JVM ecosystem experience.
Practical AWS cloud experience, including containers and services such as ECS and/or EKS.
Strong MySQL and SQL skills, including the ability to design, query, troubleshoot, and optimize data-backed services.
Experience with GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern engineering delivery practices.
Experience supporting production systems in regulated, high-availability, or customer-critical environments.
Strong understanding of backend service design, APIs, microservices, observability, reliability, and maintainability.
Clear communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, risk, operations, and stakeholder groups.
Banking, fintech, payments, or broader financial services experience is highly desirable.
Knowledge of compliance, risk, and regulatory operating environments is highly desirable.
Secure coding experience, including vulnerability assessment and remediation, is highly desirable.
Experience building and operating microservices and API-led platforms is highly desirable.
Experience with AI engineering productivity tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or Cursor is highly desirable.
C# / .NET experience is a beneficial future/secondary skill.
Azure platform experience is a beneficial future/secondary skill.
Cosmos DB experience is a beneficial future/secondary skill.
Experience with accounting, payroll, or ERP integrations is a beneficial future/secondary skill.
