About the Role

Spangler’s Market is seeking an experienced, dependable, and team-oriented Manager on Duty (MOD) to help lead daily store operations at our newest location in San Francisco. This role supports front-line staff, ensures an exceptional customer experience, and fosters a positive, collaborative workplace culture. The MOD serves as a bridge between departments, customers, and upper management, ensuring smooth communication and efficient operations.

Responsibilities

  • Engage customers in a friendly manner, share product information, and assist in locating products.
  • Guide the work of others, ensure staff complete daily opening/closing checklists, and plan/assign work to meet quality standards.
  • Train staff and oversee their productivity.
  • Ensure departments follow cash handling, register, and return procedures.
  • Process returns per policy and assist cashiers with complex returns.
  • Note unusual transactions for management.
  • Perform all functions of opening or closing the store, including safe counts, drawer preparation, daily reports, loans, cash drops, and exchanges.
  • Maintain cashier bank per department policy and monitor cash flow.
  • Maintain awareness of current ads, promotions, holidays, and events.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with products and a willingness to continue learning.
  • Notify Management of any situations relating to customer service, safety, productivity, security, or other adverse situations.
  • Ring up and bag customer purchases, and perform carry-outs.
  • Coordinate front-end coverage, run the line chart, ensure staff breaks and lunches, and call for back-up as needed.
  • Assist with ordering duties, including placing orders, breaking down loads, ensuring proper facing and sales tags, and notifying management of needed tags or new item entries.
  • Train new hires and retrain established staff to meet corporate standards.
  • Handle damaged and spoiled product according to company policy.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and rotation of all areas, products, and supplies.
  • Resolve issues with items not scanning properly, input items into POS, or notify management of complex issues.
  • Assist with financial duties, including scanning and organizing invoices.
  • Be cross-trained in all departments to step in for call-outs.
  • Maintain accountability in the absence of the GM or AGM, respond to customer and employee issues, and protect the store.
  • Contribute to a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Demonstrate an adaptable and flexible work style, shifting tasks as priorities change.
  • Demonstrate ability to multitask and manage own time.
  • Adjust priorities, productivity, efficiency, and speed based on department needs.

  • Lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience in grocery (or similar retail) operations.
  • Prior experience in buying and receiving is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, hands-on leadership style.
  • Commitment to community values and creating a supportive work environment.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Familiarity with POS or inventory systems.
