About the Role
The British Council Japan seeks a dedicated Senior Teacher to uphold and elevate academic quality by leading teacher development initiatives. This role is crucial for promoting high-quality teaching and ensuring effective English language learning, contributing to a rewarding student experience and the British Council's cultural relations mission.
Responsibilities
- Provide line management, guidance, and performance support to teachers.
- Monitor staff wellbeing and offer support.
- Act as a duty officer for teachers, parents, and students.
- Contribute to recruitment, induction, and mentoring programs for teachers.
- Design, coordinate, and deliver an annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program.
- Identify teacher development needs and create growth opportunities.
- Promote reflective practice and continuous improvement through classroom observations, feedback, coaching, mentoring, demonstration lessons, and professional development sessions.
- Stay informed about developments in English Language Teaching (ELT) and share best practices.
- Represent the British Council at relevant professional events.
- Support academic quality, product delivery, and the implementation of key policies and frameworks.
- Champion safeguarding, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
- Contribute to the British Council's mission and deliver an outstanding learner experience.
Requirements
- Undergraduate/University degree.
- Cambridge CELTA or Trinity TESOL certification.
- Cambridge DELTA, Trinity DipTESOL, or equivalent qualification recognized by the British Council.
- A minimum of 2 years of post-diploma experience teaching various age groups and levels.
- Knowledge and experience in managing Young Learners course delivery.
- Knowledge and experience in line managing or coordinating teaching teams.
- Knowledge and experience in teacher training.
- Proficiency in English equivalent to CEFR C2 level.
- Relevant Young Learner qualification (e.g., TYLEC, YL Extension to CELTA etc.) is desirable.
- TYLEC trainer qualification or equivalent is desirable.
- Relevant Early Years certificate/qualification is desirable.
- Relevant masters/post graduate qualification is desirable.
- Extensive experience in teaching Primary aged 6 to 10 (800+ hours) is desirable.
- Extensive experience in teaching Lower Secondary aged 11 to 14 (400+ hours) is desirable.
- Extensive experience in teaching Upper Secondary aged 15 to 17 (400+ hours) is desirable.
- Extensive experience in teaching Early Years aged 2 to 5 (400+ hours) is desirable.
- Candidates are expected to have researched their right to live and work in Japan.
- Successful applicants will be supported in obtaining a work visa.
- Background screening is required for all successful candidates.
