About the Role
The Lead Test Engineer will own the test stand facilities, designing, building, and running them to prove design claims. This role involves end-to-end ownership of test infrastructure, including instrumentation, data acquisition, control systems, and safety protocols. The engineer will write test procedures, conduct hazard reviews, define and enforce abort limits, and drive rapid test turnaround to accelerate the company's iteration speed.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and run test facilities for engine testing.
- Own test infrastructure end to end, including stand structure, fuel gas train, starting and loading systems, cooling, fire and overspeed protection, and instrumentation.
- Manage data acquisition and control room operations.
- Write test procedures.
- Conduct hazard reviews and define/enforce abort limits.
- Run tests rapidly, aiming for quick turnarounds between builds.
- Reduce test data the same day and compare results to predictions.
- Communicate discrepancies between reality and design models to the design team.
Requirements
- Experience testing high-energy machinery (gas turbines, rocket engines, turbochargers, compressors, or comparable rotating or combustion hardware).
- Experience building or significantly modifying a test stand.
- Experience running hot hardware where mistakes can destroy equipment or cause injury.
- Strong instrumentation and DAQ fundamentals (sensor selection, signal conditioning, calibration, sampling rates).
- Comfortable with data reduction and scripting (Python or similar).
- Familiarity with gas fuel systems, high-pressure plumbing, and test safety practices is strongly preferred.
- Calmness at the console and discipline about procedures.
- Ability to treat turnaround time as a design variable.
- Judgment to stop tests when necessary.
