About the Role
Respite Support Staff provide care for children, youth, and adults with diagnosed intellectual disabilities, offering services in Centre-Based Respite, Residential Care, Summer Programs, and Day Programs.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the physical, emotional, medical, and behavioral needs of program participants are met.
- Dispense medication and complete all medication charting in compliance with agency policies.
- Complete safety checks, logbook recordings, and intake/discharge functions.
- Ensure participant safety throughout the night, including documented half-hourly room checks.
- Prepare meals and snacks for the following day according to the approved menu.
- Advocate for program participants to promote health and well-being.
- Perform house maintenance duties and organize/maintain property and program supplies.
- Ensure participants follow personal care routines.
- Provide intervention for behavioral challenges.
- Liaise with parents, caregivers, and community partners as required.
- Provide transportation for participants using program vehicles, as needed.
- Record information in the daily log, shift change book, anecdotal recordings, incident reports, and restraint forms.
- Perform other position-related duties as required.
- Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Requirements
- Minimum of one year of prior work experience in a social services setting providing direct care to children, youth, and adults with intellectual disabilities, including crisis management.
- Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
- Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
- Current Safe Food Handling Certification.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgment.
- Ability to work independently and as a responsible team member.
- Must be able to lift/move 50 lbs unassisted.
- Participate in mandatory orientation training, ongoing professional development, and training.
- Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal processes.
- Ensure all certifications are maintained as required.
- Exhibit good listening skills, strong oral/written communication skills, and respect for authority.
- Self-motivated and disciplined.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Email, Internet).
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License.
- Current original copy of a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
- Original copy of a satisfactory Background Check with vulnerable sector screening (CPIC or local police detachment).
- May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.

Salary/Compensations
- $24.06 per hour
- The target hiring range for this position is $23.10 to $28.88 with a maximum of $34.65.
- Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
