About the Role
Trusted Shops is building Europe's Community of Trust, a space for confident, transparent, and secure connections between businesses and consumers. The Data Services team is evolving to deliver standardized data products from a shared Data Lakehouse, serving as the foundation for self-service reporting, APIs, and AI access. This Principal Analytics Engineer role is a hands-on technical leadership position focused on defining the lakehouse architecture and standards, shipping genuine data products, and elevating the skills of the team.
Responsibilities
- Define and evolve the lakehouse architecture (S3 + Apache Iceberg + Athena + dbt), including table and layer design, partitioning, schema evolution, multi-team isolation, and catalog management.
- Establish standards for data products, including modeling conventions, semantic layer, data-product definitions, testing, data quality, CI/CD, documentation, and metadata.
- Build data products within the Product domain to set a pattern for others.
- Design metadata and semantic layers for AI agent querying and pioneer AI use cases in the build workflow.
- Track the lakehouse, analytics-engineering, and AI landscape, evaluating and driving adoption of new approaches.
- Mentor analysts and engineers, improve review quality, provide technical clarity, and challenge the status quo.
Requirements
- Deep, hands-on lakehouse experience, including designing and building architectures.
- Proficiency with open table formats (Apache Iceberg or equivalent), object storage (S3), serverless query engines (Athena or equivalent), and dbt.
- Excellent analytics-engineering craft, including data-product and dimensional modeling, testing, CI/CD, and strong instincts for query performance and cost.
- Demonstrated technical leadership beyond a single team, with experience setting standards or architecture adopted by other teams.
- Ability to influence without formal authority.
- A product mindset, treating data as a product with consumers and SLAs, including non-human consumers.
- Concrete, hands-on AI experience and curiosity for responsible experimentation.
- Comfort with autonomy and ambiguity, including setting direction and making decisions.
