About the Role

The Principal Engineer in the Highways and Freeways group will lead the growth of the Transportation Engineering practice for the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO). This role involves managing a team of Highway Engineers and Design Specialists on multidisciplinary transportation projects, including rehabilitation, expansion, and widening of highways and freeways.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage Highway Engineering components on MTO projects from planning to execution.
• Direct design development for functional studies, preliminary design, and detail design.
• Oversee project teams including engineers, designers, and subcontractors.
• Liaise with MTO and stakeholders to resolve project challenges.
• Support Project Managers in developing project plans, schedules, and budgets.
• Manage project risks to minimize delays and cost overruns.
• Monitor field investigations, geometric, grading, roadside safety, drainage, and storm sewer design.
• Oversee pavement marking, signage, construction staging, traffic management, and roadway modelling.
• Manage quantity estimating, utility coordination, and contract document preparation.
• Integrate MTO active transportation plans and standards into designs.
• Prepare technical reports and ensure quality assurance of deliverables.
• Assist in business development, proposal preparation, and work program development.

Requirements

• University degree in Civil or Transportation Engineering or a related discipline.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
• 15+ years of MTO experience.
• Solid experience in MTO Preliminary and/or Detail Design.
• Knowledge of MTO standards, policies, and transportation infrastructure needs.
• Advanced knowledge of highway design, construction, maintenance, traffic operations, and contract delivery.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
• Proven ability to manage remote or hybrid teams.
