About the Role

This role will focus on the design of electrical, lighting, and fire-alarm services within the built environment. It involves surveying and inspecting existing systems, performing energy calculations, and reviewing contractor work. The position also includes digital drafting, calculations, and design preparation.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical, lighting, and fire-alarm distribution systems for new construction.
  • Assist with walkthroughs and surveys of existing buildings, focusing on all components that impact electrical/lighting/fire-alarm systems, including measurements, photos, and equipment inventory.
  • Perform short circuit, overcurrent coordination, load/arc flash studies, as well as lighting photometric calculations and circuitry/panelboard design for power and lighting devices.
  • Become well versed in communicating the nuances of New York City’s various laws, building codes, and legislation, as well as NFPA 70 (Electrical) and NFPA 72 (Fire Alarm).
  • Assist with preparing summary documentation (photo reports, site markups, verbal communication).
  • Work with other disciplines/vendors for cross-collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Perform digital drafting of schematic and detailed construction documents of various electrical and fire-alarm projects in both AutoCAD and Revit.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or applicable work experience.
  • 2-4 years of electrical engineering of buildings and/or design in support of various existing building projects and initiatives.
  • Understanding of processes, compliance, and other design consulting and construction professionals.
  • Adhere to all Structures Group Special Competencies and Certifications listed within the Appendix A.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively, balance assigned work, and exceptional organization skills.
  • Basic working knowledge and experience of electrical and fire alarm distribution systems (panelboards, transformers, voltage drop, circuitry, device placement).
  • Ability to navigate urban, rural, and industrial sites.
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record strongly preferred.
  • Ability to walk stairwells, multiple stairs, various basement areas, and occupied spaces.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time in front of a computer terminal, proficiently operating a computer keyboard while looking at the screen, and operating general office equipment.
