About the Role

The San Francisco Adult Probation Department provides pretrial, reentry, and rehabilitative services to help justice-involved adults exit the criminal justice system. This role supports these efforts by gathering and analyzing background information, preparing reports with risk assessments and bail recommendations, and monitoring client compliance with release conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Interview newly detained defendants to gather, verify, and analyze background information.
  • Prepare reports with risk assessments and bail recommendations for the court.
  • Monitor client compliance with release conditions and facilitate court appearances.
  • Conduct intake interviews with detainees, verify background information, and assess risk to the community.
  • Conduct interviews with detainees to gather information on community ties, employment, and criminal history.
  • Supervise defendants released into the community by enforcing conditions and monitoring for violations.
  • Coordinate services and referrals.
  • Prepare reports for judges detailing recommendations for release or detention.
  • Review case files, conduct background checks, and update information in the case management system.
  • Install Global Positioning System (GPS) or continuous alcohol monitoring (CAM) devices on defendants.
  • Interact with law enforcement, attorneys, family members, and defendants to gather information and ensure compliance.
  • Evaluate recently arrested individuals to assist judges in making bail and release decisions.
  • Research criminal histories, check for active warrants, and verify background data.
  • Compile, analyze, and submit bond reports and recommendations to judicial officers.
  • Complete risk assessments and compile information for court reports.
  • Support unit functions and provide information to the court.
  • Support monitoring team in community, court, or in office.
  • Prepare, process, and obtain signatures on legal documents.
  • Enter data into case management system and maintain accurate, confidential records.
  • Serve as liaison to collateral agencies including courts, DA’s office, schools, social services, mental health providers, and law enforcement.
  • Research and retrieve documents requested by the court regarding records disposition and conditions of probation.
  • Represent the department at community group meetings.
  • Locate and communicate with clients by telephone and in the office to gather factual information.
  • Prepare referrals to available services and verify payment of court-imposed fines, restitution, and child support.
  • Conduct client drug testing and maintain the chain of custody of information.
  • Transport clients to a variety of non-custodial locations.
  • Gather information from victims to determine restitution for pre-sentence investigations.
  • Submit restitution reports for Court probation matters, complete judicial council forms and maintain case notes.
  • Update information in the criminal justice and case management systems on the verification of program completion/participation.
  • Update departmental databases with changes to contact information, services provided, and resources used.
  • Provide administrative support to Probation Officers and civilian personnel.
  • Perform client check-ins for clients visiting the Community Assessment and Service Center (CASC).
  • Assist clients with various needs at the CASC, such as food distribution and directing them to services.
  • Answer client questions regarding available services and resources.
  • Train new or reassigned probation assistants and act as a backup to other units.
  • Process and sort incoming/outgoing mail and deliveries.
  • Operate office equipment and/or machinery.
  • Utilize the CTAG case management system.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Possession of an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university course work in the Criminal, Social and Behavioral Sciences or closely related field.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License within 45 days of appointment to this position.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
  • Bilingual skills are possessed.
