About the Role
KPMG's Pensions Advisory business is expanding its pensions team and seeking talented individuals to deliver high-quality actuarial advice for defined benefit pension schemes, with a focus on both public and private sectors.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic journey planning, risk management, and endgame options for pension schemes.
- Offer strategic funding advice to sponsors and ensure compliance with DB funding codes.
- Conduct pension due diligence for mergers and acquisitions.
- Deliver member education and communication services.
- Advise on benefit changes, design, and implementation.
- Provide guidance on good governance and compliance.
- Offer pensions accounting advice.
- Serve as a key client contact and manage engagements within timelines.
- Gather and query client pension data, reviewing responses.
- Assess the reasonableness of actuarial assumptions and accounting results using KPMG tools.
- Draft and initially review reporting, with senior-level sign-off.
- Maintain open and honest communication within the team.
- Direct and oversee junior team members, including reviewing work and providing coaching.
- Develop junior actuarial colleagues through technical training and skill enhancement.
- Manage financial aspects, including timely billing and debt collection.
- Identify and bill for out-of-scope work.
- Ensure technical actuarial work complies with standards and KPMG quality procedures.
Requirements
- Understand technical actuarial, accounting, and financial reporting standards, pension regulations, and literature.
- Stay current with industry knowledge and leverage KPMG methodologies.
- Utilize firm-approved tools and technology for quality, productivity, and data insights.
- Apply professional skepticism, objectivity, and independence to actuarial and accounting work.
- Maintain complete documentation and audit trails demonstrating a focus on quality.

- Experience in pensions actuarial at an employee benefit consultancy or Big 4 firm.
- Basic knowledge of defined benefit pension scheme valuations, roll forward methodologies, and actuarial techniques.
- Good technical understanding of pensions liability calculations.
- Understanding of the wider UK pensions landscape.
- Knowledge of pensions funding and accounting regimes.
- Experience leading and performance managing teams, coaching, and mentoring junior staff.
- Experience on complex projects, including team oversight and stakeholder management.
- Experience delivering benefit change, member options, and end game journey planning.
- Experience advising Trustees/corporates on scheme funding and knowledge of the Pensions Regulator's regime, including the DB scheme funding code and Single Code of Practice.
- IT literate with strong MS Office skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Highly effective stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, able to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective problem-solving skills, making pragmatic and logical decisions.
