About the Role
The Diving Safety Officer (DSO) coordinates in-building underwater diving operations and supports field diving. The DSO is a voting member of the Academy’s Diving Control Board, responsible for governing diving safety policies. This role ensures the safety of divers and the Steinhart Aquarium’s living collection by implementing and enforcing safe diving practices, protocols, and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert on the Academy’s Diving Control Board (DCB) for safe dive program operations.
- Provide subject matter expertise to ensure compliance with legal requirements, particularly under Cal/OSHA.
- Ensure dive program adherence to standards adopted from professional societies, such as AAUS.
- Prepare policy and procedural recommendations for the DCB, including updates to the Dive Manual.
- Supervise assigned dive officers in day-to-day dive operations, including scheduling, training, and safety readiness.
- Coordinate dive-related volunteer activities.
- Review and advise all Academy scientific divers on their diving status.
- Conduct or arrange training and certification courses for staff and volunteers.
- Assist Academy divers with dive plan preparation, review, and recommendations.
- Assist in preparing the annual departmental budget and track expenses for diving operations.
- Foster working relationships with other institutions for joint dive operations.
- Participate in the activities of national professional organizations, such as AAUS and ADPA.
- Communicate and coordinate with Academy departments, including Steinhart Aquarium, Education, and Building Operations.
- Stay abreast of legal and policy changes in the professional dive industry.
- Follow all Academy safety regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of 7 years experience as an active SCUBA instructor certified by an internationally recognized agency, with endorsements in rescue and first aid.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience applicable to zoo, aquarium, and field scientific diving.
- Minimum 5 years as an active scientific diver and full member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS).
- Broad knowledge base in all aspects of diving and diving technology applicable to the Academy’s dive program.
- Professional knowledge of diving theory and its application to safe diving practices.
- Technical and scientific expertise in diving equipment and technology.
- Certified Oxygen Administration, First Aid, and CPR instructor.
- Ability to train staff and volunteers on safety procedures, equipment setup, maintenance, compressor operations, boat operations, and emergency response.
- Self-assured and comfortable giving directives and acting authoritatively.
- Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate well with team members and external collaborators.
- Ability to work efficiently and communicate with diverse staff and external customers.
- Ability to bring new ideas, create inventive solutions, and find efficiencies.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.
- Ability to lift and transport 75 lbs.
- Ability to perform repetitive motions 50% of the time.
