About the Role

This early career-level role supports a high-profile, highly driven group of councillors, helping them to deliver on their ambitions. It offers a great introduction into the world of policy and politics, providing the chance to witness the inner workings of an exceptional local authority first-hand. The role focuses on ensuring the Leader of the Opposition (LotO) is well-informed on key areas of council policy and delivery through high-quality briefing, research, and casework assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality briefing, research and casework assistance to the Leader of the Opposition (LotO).
  • Ensure the LotO is well-informed on key areas of council policy and delivery.
  • Tackle a range of issues with exposure to officers and services across the council.
  • Feed back trends and insights emerging from casework to the LotO.
  • Commission and draft briefings, speeches and other materials.
  • Provide light-touch, seamless administrative and secretarial support.
  • Handle the LotO’s diary.
  • Take minutes.
  • Follow up on agreed actions.

Requirements

  • Experience working with senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Confidence to build trust and communicate well at all levels.
  • Experience supporting politicians or senior officers at Director level is an advantage.
  • Understanding of working in a politically sensitive environment.
  • Diplomacy and sound judgement in handling information and competing priorities.
  • Good understanding of the issues facing local government.
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative to carry out research, follow up cases and provide flexible support.
  • Ability to act as a reliable point of reference or quickly find accurate information in complex subject areas.
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure, manage deadlines and know when to ask for support.
  • Ability to understand the impact of working in a political environment.
  • Confidence taking in large volumes of information, sifting through what matters and challenging details where needed.
  • Strong research skills to horizon scan across local and national issues.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to draft reports and prepare written material.
  • Ability to work with colleagues and partners.
  • Ability to build effective relationships.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
