About the Role

Montgomery College seeks candidates for a Full-time Academic Tutor to provide educational services and assistance for students enrolled in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Science courses. This position is eligible for telework one day a week, with specific state residency requirements for telework.

Responsibilities

  • Provide educational and tutorial assistance with assigned learning activities.
  • Determine and suggest activities to assist students’ understanding in the disciplines served by the learning center.
  • Assist students in the use of science models, specialized calculators, and the equipment used in the discipline.
  • Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement methods to encourage, motivate, and build confidence in the study material.
  • Teach and assist students with strategies to study and comprehend material.
  • Review class material by reviewing texts, lecture notes, practice problems, worksheets, etc.
  • Answer students’ questions regarding computer-related information.
  • Assess students’ progress throughout tutoring sessions.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in learning assistance and interdisciplinary content areas.
  • Provide instructions virtually.
  • Provide workshops and help sessions.
  • Develop materials for training tutors and facilitate the training.
  • May assist with operations of learning center including hiring and supervising student assistants and managing resources.
  • Maintain fluency in multiple disciplines (e.g., math and sciences) to enable students to see connections between the disciplines and the related learning centers.
  • Develop training and resource materials to provide instructional associates in the appropriate disciplines (e.g., STEM areas).
  • Collaborate with faculty in multiple disciplines to foster efficient student engagement and retention.
  • Develop educational material, coordinating with faculty and staff, to be used by students served by multiple discipline learning centers (e.g., math and science centers).
  • Compile new educational materials to contribute to the resource collection and ensure consistency of service.
  • Develop and/or identify strategies or programs for students, including students with special needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, including at least 25 credit hours in the disciplines appropriate to the centers where services are provided (e.g., natural science and mathematics) or the equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Five years of experience tutoring/teaching in more than one discipline.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

  • Submit an unofficial copy of your transcripts from your highest degree earned.
  • For degrees earned outside of the U.S., a copy of your education equivalency, conducted by a nationally recognized evaluation service, must be included in your application.
  • Successful completion of a background check and degree verification (if applicable).
  • Participation in a Maryland State Retirement System plan (Pension or Optional Retirement Plan, depending on the position).

Salary/Compensations

  • $67,557 - $87,813/annually
  • Maximum salary $108,068/annually
