About the Role
The Dishwasher is an important member of KIPP NYC's Culinary Team, helping to ensure the kitchen operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all food safety and sanitation standards. This role supports daily meal service by maintaining a clean and organized kitchen, washing dishes and equipment, assisting with food preparation, and contributing to a positive team environment.
Responsibilities
- Wash and sanitize pots, pans, dishes, utensils, trays, serving equipment, and kitchen tools throughout meal service.
- Assist with bussing trays, bins, and dish return stations during breakfast and lunch service.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen, dishwashing area, and servery.
- Support food preparation activities as directed by the Head Chef or culinary staff.
- Assist with meal service, kitchen setup, and cleanup as needed.
- Support special meal functions, events, and additional food service activities.
- Follow all Department of Health (DOH), USDA, HACCP, and KIPP NYC food safety, sanitation, and cleaning procedures.
- Maintain assigned workstations in a clean, organized, and sanitary condition.
- Properly clean, store, and care for kitchen equipment and supplies.
- Maintain acceptable standards of personal hygiene and adhere to department dress code requirements.
- Immediately report equipment issues or safety concerns to the Head Chef.
- Work collaboratively with the culinary team to ensure efficient kitchen operations and high-quality meal service.
- Assist in other areas of food production or service based on operational needs.
- Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and a commitment to outstanding customer service.
- Maintain regular and dependable attendance.
Requirements
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while maintaining high standards of quality and customer service.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role, including standing for extended periods; carrying, bending, stretching, stooping, pushing, pulling, and lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds.

- This role is based in NYC and will require travel to our schools.
- If you relocate outside of a commutable distance or out of the state of NY, your employment will be subject to review, which may include separation from KIPP NYC.
- You must notify HR if you move or have plans to relocate.

Experience Level
- Previous commercial kitchen experience is preferred
- Previous experience working in a commercial kitchen, school nutrition program, restaurant, or food service environment preferred, but not required.
Education Level
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Salary/Compensations
- $17.00 – $19.00 per hour
