About the Role
The Director of Indirect Tax leads all aspects of indirect tax compliance, reporting, and advisory support, ensuring accurate filings, strengthening internal controls, and maintaining effective tax processes. This role provides technical expertise, manages external advisors, and oversees responses to audits and regulatory changes.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all indirect tax compliance activities, including sales tax, GST, and use tax for US states and jurisdictions, Canada, and Puerto Rico
- Oversee the preparation, review, and timely filing of indirect tax returns and related reporting
- Maintain and enhance internal controls, process documentation, and compliance procedures
- Conduct technical research and analyze the impact of indirect tax law changes on the business
- Partner with cross-functional teams including Procurement, Accounts Payable, and Accounting to ensure accurate taxability determinations for products and services
- Manage configuration, maintenance, and accuracy of indirect tax automation systems (e.g., OneSource)
- Serve as the primary liaison with external tax advisors and tax authorities
- Manage responses to tax audits, notices, and information requests
- Provide indirect tax support on business initiatives, system updates, and contract reviews
- Identify and implement tax planning opportunities to drive value to CDK
- Drive process improvement/automation across the organization to increase efficiency and reduce risk of errors in indirect taxation
- Mentor and develop the 2 indirect tax team members to ensure strong performance and professional growth
- Monitor compliance obligations across existing jurisdictions and support registration requirements where needed
- Follow all CDK Global policies and procedures
- Complete all mandatory assigned compliance tasks and acknowledgements
- Meet or exceed all performance expectations
- Hire and train new employees
- Organize workflow and ensure that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks
- Set goals for performance, monitor employee productivity, and provide constructive feedback and coaching
- Ensure adherence to legal and company policies and procedures and undertake disciplinary actions if the need arises
- Role model company values and leadership expectations
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
- 10+ years of indirect tax experience with multi-state exposure
- Strong knowledge of sales and use tax rules applicable to technology and/or service-based industries
- Demonstrated experience leading indirect tax compliance processes
- Proficiency with indirect tax automation platforms (e.g., OneSource)
- Strong analytical and technical tax skills, including research and interpretation of complex regulations
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
- High attention to detail and ability to manage recurring deadlines effectively
- Strong organizational and project management abilities
