About the Role

This role owns Fastly's answer to how and where code runs in the evolving internet landscape shaped by AI, automation, and machine traffic. You will manage Compute and VCL as a single, coherent runtime surface, defining their convergence, purpose-built aspects, and shared primitives to create a unified platform for customer workloads.

Responsibilities

  • Own the runtime surface end-to-end, defining and driving the strategy and roadmap for Fastly's runtimes, including Compute and VCL.
  • Define where runtimes converge, remain purpose-built, and what primitives they should share, reducing duplicated abstractions.
  • Enhance Compute as a runtime and platform surface, focusing on primitives, predictable limits, and reliability for demanding workloads.
  • Bring new execution models onto Fastly as native runtime workloads, defining their integration and fit alongside Compute and VCL.
  • Define how runtimes meet the AI era by building necessary primitives and controls for AI workloads and new execution patterns.
  • Form strong technical opinions on runtime direction, defend them with evidence, and drive decisions across Engineering, Product, and leadership.
  • Partner closely with the Core Infrastructure technical lead, go-to-market functions, and the hybrid/on-prem team to execute across boundaries.
  • Bring structure to ambiguous problems and move decisions forward earlier.

Requirements

  • 8+ years in product management or technical product leadership, ideally on infrastructure, platform, or developer-facing products.
  • Deep understanding of execution environments, including runtimes, containers, isolation models, serverless or edge compute, and their trade-offs.
  • Demonstrated bias for shipping; comfortable owning outcomes in ambiguous, fast-moving conditions.
  • Proven ability to form strong technical opinions, defend them with evidence, and lead without authority.
  • Clear, confident communicator capable of deep technical discussion and crisp strategic framing.
  • Genuine curiosity about customer problems and ability to translate runtime capabilities into developer productivity and business value.
  • Must be available during core business hours.

Skills

  • Runtime and systems fluency
  • Execution focus
  • Conviction and influence
  • Communication and presence
  • Customer empathy
  • Startup or 0-to-1 experience building and shipping technical products
  • Hands-on background with runtime and isolation technology (e.g., container platforms, WebAssembly component model and WASI 0.3, Firecracker or comparable microVM and sandboxing stacks, or similar execution engines)
  • Experience with edge compute, developer platforms, or runtime interoperability at scale
