About the Role

The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance and repair of buildings, wastewater treatment plant equipment and machines and machine tools. The role requires a working knowledge of electrical and control systems and a high level of competency within a specific trade, with a functioning ability in multiple areas. This position will also guide and train less experienced personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain pumps, valves, motors, and other process equipment.
  • Set up and operate machine tools to fabricate and repair mechanisms and equipment.
  • Fabricate, install, adjust, dismantle, and reassemble machines and plant equipment.
  • Operate various tools including lathes, saws, grinders, milling machines, spray welders, gas welders, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Operate hoists, lifts, air hammers, grinders, welders, and cutting equipment.
  • Perform welding functions on buildings and equipment, including repair and fabrication.
  • Study specifications such as blueprints and schematics to plan operations.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance of plant equipment.
  • Recommend replacement parts.
  • Maintain computerized work orders and records.
  • Provide assistance and direction to less experienced mechanics and helpers.
  • Support other skilled trades employees.
  • Maintain housekeeping of maintenance shop, job sites, and work areas.
  • Observe all on-the-job safety regulations.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a maintenance mechanic, plumber, electrician, or HVAC technician.
  • Two years of related education at a college, trade school or equivalent may be substituted for experience.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license and ability to meet risk management guidelines.
  • Completion of recognized Apprenticeship program.

Skills

  • Working knowledge of electrical and control systems.
  • High level of competency within a specific trade (e.g., welding, millwright, mechanics).
  • Functioning ability in multiple trade areas.
  • Knowledge of treatment plant machine equipment operations and maintenance/repair procedures.
  • Ability to safely operate electrical test equipment, conduit bender, grinders, nibblers, angle iron cutter, hydraulic press, hoist, and other hand or power tools.
  • Familiarity with all safety regulations.
  • Prepared to work in and supervise confined space entry.
  • Familiarity with LOTO procedures.
  • Ability to understand the functions of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Ability to cut with a cutting torch and an arc rod.
  • Ability to solder and weld.
