About the Role

Orbital Copilot is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to own and shape the company's legal function, acting as an embedded business partner to product, commercial, and leadership teams. This role is crucial for transforming the legal function into a proactive partner by understanding the business and building necessary processes and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Partner with global sales teams to negotiate commercial contracts, NDAs, and DPAs.
• Review vendor contracts with a legal lens and ensure teams understand their obligations.
• Field legal questions from across the business, including HR, employment law, finance, and data protection.
• Build a proactive partnership with product to identify legal risks before features ship or pricing models change.
• Anticipate future business needs and identify potential legal risks and gaps.
• Lead significant legal change projects such as terms revamps and commercial framework updates.
• Train the wider team on legal boundaries to contain escalations.
• Build a trusted and valued legal function embedded across business leadership.
• Partner with Operations to ensure the legal function operates efficiently, leveraging AI and technology.
• Plan for future team needs and manage external counsel resources.

Requirements

• Prior in-house legal experience at a scaling SaaS company is essential.
• Experience operating inside a fast-moving business is required.
• Pragmatism, commercial pace, and helpfulness are necessary qualities.
• Ability to make things happen and drive the function forward.
• Experience in both private practice and in-house is common, with in-house experience being weighed most heavily.
• Willingness to be genuinely embedded and shape decisions proactively.
• Ability to see what needs doing and move the function forward without waiting to be asked.
• Understanding of security policies, awareness training, and handling sensitive data.
