About the Role
The Manager, Technology Transfer & Post-Award Compliance will manage and advance NYBCe's technology transfer function and intellectual property portfolio, focusing on innovations in therapeutic research. This role also provides post-award administration support to ensure sponsored research awards are managed compliantly. This position is key to NYBCe's strategy of maximizing the development, commercialization, and impact of its inventions.
Responsibilities
- Review, analyze, and evaluate disclosures for technical merit, patentability, commercial potential, and practical utility.
- Conduct or coordinate prior art searches, market research, and technology valuation analyses.
- Recommend patent filing, prosecution, continuation, national phase, maintenance, and abandonment strategies with inventors and patent counsel.
- Develop technology development and commercialization plans, including milestones, timelines, and recommended pathways.
- Identify and engage potential licensees, collaborators, strategic partners, and investors.
- Prepare and disseminate non-confidential marketing materials, technology summaries, and business presentations.
- Negotiate business and intellectual property terms for various agreements (NDAs, MTAs, licenses, etc.).
- Maintain and manage the NYBCe enterprise patent and technology portfolio docket.
- Track key patent prosecution deadlines, maintenance decisions, and portfolio status.
- Manage license-related obligations, including milestone dates, diligence requirements, and royalty reporting.
- Establish, implement, and improve standardized technology transfer procedures, templates, and processes.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with inventors, researchers, commercial partners, funders, and stakeholders.
- Organize and lead portfolio, licensing, and commercialization meetings.
- Prepare clear recommendations and status reports for senior stakeholders.
- Serve as a resource on intellectual property management, commercialization, and IP-related contracting.
- Support award setup and account establishment upon Notice of Award.
- Monitor award burn rates, budget-to-actuals, and financial projections.
- Support cost transfers, rebudgeting requests, and other post-award modifications.
- Support compliance monitoring and timely submission of required reporting.
- Assist with subrecipient monitoring and risk assessment.
- Assist with sponsor prior-approval requests and drawdown/invoicing coordination.
- Support award close-out activities, including financial reconciliation and reporting.
- Help maintain audit-ready documentation and support OSP during audits and site visits.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Research Administration, Business, Public Health, or related field.
- Five or more years of progressive experience in technology transfer, intellectual property management, licensing, commercialization, business development, or sponsored programs administration.
- Experience should include exposure to post-award grants and contract administration.
- Experience in a research institution, academic medical center, nonprofit research organization, healthcare organization, or life science environment is highly desirable.
- Advanced knowledge of technology transfer, patent practices, patent portfolio management, licensing, commercialization, and biomedical product development.
- Strong understanding of the legal and business implications of contracts, licenses, and related agreements.
- Knowledge of FDA-regulated product development, preclinical and clinical development, translational research, and the clinical trials process preferred.
- Familiarity with commercialization pathways including out-licensing, option agreements, and spin-outs/start-ups.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Ability to use or learn IP docketing, CRM, contract management, and portfolio tracking systems.
- Working knowledge of post-award grants and contracts administration, including NIH Grants Policy Statement and OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200).
- Familiarity with electronic research administration systems (eRA Commons, ASSIST, Grants.gov) is preferred.
