About the Role

The City of Austin’s Emergency Medical Services Department provides 9-1-1 emergency medical response throughout Austin and Travis County, Texas. As a third service public safety provider, the focus is on emergency medicine, with Medics trusted as clinicians providing excellent patient care. This role offers a fulfilling career with an internal Paramedic program, over 20 specialized units, and opportunities for promotion. New hires begin as Cadets in a paid 8-week training academy, followed by field training before independent duty. Medics engage in continuous learning through practice and Continuing Education courses.

Responsibilities

Participates in the Austin – Travis County Emergency Medical Services Academy training program, including lectures, laboratory practice, simulations, field exercises, and physical training.
Participates in mandatory physical training, including aerobic conditioning, weight training, and calisthenic exercises.
Develops knowledge of patient advocacy and interagency teamwork.
Develops skills for assessing patients and knowledge of procedures as defined by the Medical Director.
Develops knowledge and skills in documenting patient care and other reports appropriately.
Participates in learning to operate an emergency vehicle, respond to emergency scenes, and transport patients.
Maintains a strong safety focus and follows safety standards and practices.
Works during holidays and bad weather as an essential position.
Completes the Austin-Travis County Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO) credentialing process within nine (9) months of hire.

Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older.
Must read, write, and speak English.
Must be eligible for employment in the U.S.
Must have a valid driver's license for a minimum of 2 years.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in a position with public-facing customer service.
Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Must be able to don and effectively wear required Department issued personal protective equipment.
Must have unimpaired mobility to quickly respond to ambulance, access patients in difficult terrain, climb stairs, and work in close/dangerous environments.
Must be able to perform strenuous physical requirements such as CPR, lifting and moving equipment and patients.
Must be able to swim at the basic survival level.
Must be able to perform required medical skills and techniques.
Must have correctable vision acceptable for day and night operation of emergency vehicles, color acuity, and ability to read medication dosages.
Must be able to hear and understand information from patients, family, bystanders, breath sounds, blood pressures, radio traffic, and differentiate conversations in distracting environments.
Must be able to speak and enunciate clearly in loud conditions and stressful situations, and verbally communicate with patients, families, and other personnel.

Basic pre-hospital emergency medical care and rescue.
Operation of medical equipment utilized in pre-hospital emergency care.
Current principles and practices of emergency medical services, customer service principles, patient advocacy and incident management.
Community health risk factors, resource information and notification pathways.
