About the Role
Schnabel is seeking a Senior/Supervising Geotechnical Engineer to support our growing Geotechnical and Water practices in our Albany, NY area office. This role involves leadership, management, and technical support for multidisciplinary projects related to dams, reservoirs, flood resiliency, and heavy civil works across the Northeast and nationally. Responsibilities
- Manage, execute, and provide technical support for geotechnical and interdisciplinary infrastructure projects.
- Plan and manage geotechnical and geologic field investigations.
- Evaluate instrumentation and monitoring data.
- Assign project-specific soil and rock laboratory testing.
- Conduct engineering analyses and design specific to soil and rock mechanics, foundation design, fill placement/ground modification, embankment dam design, seepage evaluations, slope stability analyses, and seismic analyses.
- Perform value engineering (VE) and forensic studies.
- Prepare and review geotechnical engineering reports, technical documents, design drawings, technical specifications, and presentations.
- Communicate with clients and regulators.
- Establish goals and objectives for project teams.
- Schedule and coordinate resources to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to client expectations.
- Oversee, develop, and mentor geotechnical engineering staff.
- Participate in the development of a cohesive, positive culture for the Albany office and company-wide.
- Contribute to maintaining and developing Schnabel’s brand through thought leadership, published papers, and conference participation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in Geotechnical and/or Civil Engineering, or related fields from an ABET-accredited institution.
- 8+ years of experience in the geotechnical engineering field.
- Licensed Professional Engineer or ability to become registered within 6 months.
- Extensive geotechnical background with a strong fundamental knowledge of principles of geotechnical and geostructural engineering, soil and rock mechanics, earthquake engineering, and groundwater hydrology.
- Relevant geotechnical expertise with dams and water impounding structures, cofferdams, and other hydraulic structures, including seepage, static and seismic stability analysis, liquefaction analysis, deformation analysis, and foundation and settlement analysis.
- Strong technical background using geotechnical and computer-aided design software (e.g., GeoStudio, Rocscience, OpenGround, CWALSHT, PYWall, LPILE, GROUP, AutoCAD Civil 3D).
- Experience in numerical modeling using programs such as PLAXIS and FLAC is a plus.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Ability to occasionally travel to project sites, both local and remote.
- Ability to lift heavy loads (up to 25 pounds).
- Ability to pass a background check (criminal history, motor vehicle record, credit check).
- Ability to pass a pre-employment screening.
