About the Role
Trend Micro Research is seeking a Malware Research Intern to join our industry-leading research team. As a Malware Research Intern, you will be learning skills required for threat hunting, analysis of malware samples, and detection of malware communication.
Responsibilities
- Perform threat hunting by monitoring security industry publications and news sources and searching into various data resources to identify new or active malware threats.
- Reverse-engineer malware samples to identify malware communication mechanisms and analyze malware network traffic to develop Snort signatures.
- Produce documentation describing malware behavior and detection strategies.
- Communicate research results to customers, team members, and management.
- Collaborate with team members to improve the analysis and response process.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Security, or related fields of study.
- Interest in malware analysis and threat hunting.
- A strong desire to learn, demonstrated through personal projects or self-directed learning.
- Ability to analyze and describe complex application behaviors.
- Great attention to details, personal QA, and strong problem-solving skills.
- Proficient English communication skills, both written and oral.
- Team player and self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Proficient knowledge of operating systems including Windows and Linux.
- Knowledge of reverse engineering and familiarity with debugging tools such as IDA Pro, Ghidra, etc.
- Knowledge of various encryption and obfuscation techniques.
- Knowledge of TCP/IP and other networking protocols such as HTTP/FTP/SMTP/SMB.
- Familiarity with tools such as Snort, Wireshark, Windows Sysinternals and VMware.
- Experience of low level programming languages such as C/C++ or assembly language is a plus.
- Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python, Ruby, Perl, JavaScript, PowerShell or Bash.
