About the Role
The Digital Platform Architect will shape the next stage of digital support for thousands of young people navigating access to university, apprenticeships, and careers. This role sits between program ambitions and technical partners, making informed decisions about digital development, AI, data, systems, and student experience. It's an opportunity to influence student-facing digital programming used by thousands annually, especially as AI transforms guidance access.
Responsibilities
- Define the technical and product route for digital programming.
- Translate program ambitions and student needs into product requirements, technical briefs, user journeys, and delivery plans.
- Define the minimum viable version of digital programming and advise on build, buy, integration, or deferral decisions.
- Develop or commission prototypes, mock-ups, and proof-of-concept work.
- Support decision-making on priorities, phasing, cost, student value, and technical risk.
- Act as the internal representative with external engineers, UX specialists, AI partners, and technology suppliers.
- Translate non-technical requirements into specifications for development partners.
- Review supplier proposals and technical outputs, challenging for lock-in, complexity, or poor value.
- Ensure new features are tested for usability, accessibility, security, safeguarding, data protection, and content quality.
- Maintain clear documentation of product decisions, data flows, risks, assumptions, and technical dependencies.
- Explore how AI can support content navigation, guided search, coaching prompts, opportunity discovery, staff insight, and personalization.
- Ensure AI-enabled tools are grounded in approved content and are not generic or unsafe.
- Improve data flows between STO, Salesforce, application systems, communications tools, and third-party platforms.
- Define data to drive personalization, nudges, recommendations, staff dashboards, and evaluation.
- Ensure the platform supports student agency and avoids over-direction or inappropriate automation.
- Map current and future student journeys across STO and wider programs.
- Design clearer digital pathways across the student lifecycle.
- Use student feedback, staff insight, and engagement data to refine the platform experience.
- Work closely with program colleagues to ensure the platform supports delivery needs.
- Support internal colleagues in understanding product decisions, technical trade-offs, and delivery risks.
Requirements
- Experience in digital product management, platform development, service design, or technology-enabled program delivery.
- Track record of turning user needs and organizational strategy into practical product requirements.
- Technical grounding to work confidently with developers, engineers, UX specialists, and external technology suppliers.
- Experience managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders, deadlines, and technical dependencies.
- Strong written communication skills, including producing clear product documentation, user stories, specifications, and technical briefs.
- Good judgment around safeguarding, data protection, and responsible use of technology.
- Confidence working with ambiguity and turning early ideas into workable next steps.
- Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to prioritize competing demands, make proportionate decisions, and maintain focus on delivery.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Sympathy to the aims of the Trust and its mission to address educational disadvantage.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Experience in education, EdTech, widening participation, social mobility, youth work, government digital, or a social impact technology organization (preferred).
- Experience using AI-assisted or agentic tools to prototype, test, or specify digital product ideas (preferred).
- Experience working with CRMs, learning platforms, application systems, CMSs, dashboards, or student-facing systems (preferred).
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (preferred).
- Experience commissioning or managing external developers, agencies, or technical consultants (preferred).
