About the Role

Performs skilled painting work on exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures, and equipment. This role is crucial in maintaining and enhancing the aesthetic and functional integrity of city properties.

Responsibilities

• Applies paints and other finishes to various exterior or interior surfaces of buildings, including partitions, window casings, doors, cabinets, and woodwork.
• Paints street equipment, traffic or airfield markings, playground facilities, and other outdoor structures.
• Prepares surfaces for painting, including erecting scaffolding.
• Removes old paint or varnish by scraping or sanding.
• Washes, cleans, and patches surfaces to prepare them for painting.
• Mixes and prepares paints, lacquers, varnishes, shellacs, and other preservatives.
• Selects, blends, and matches colors in proper proportions.
• Assembles and operates various types of painting equipment, including spray guns and pressure washers.
• Cleans and maintains brushes and other painting equipment.
• Disposes of hazardous materials.
• Performs exacting painting, including lettering and touch-up work.
• Transports and delivers paint, materials, and equipment to worksites.
• May plan work programs, estimate, and order materials and equipment.
• Prepares estimates, work orders, and other job-related documentation.

Requirements

• Completion of a recognized painters' apprenticeship program.
• Two (2) years of verifiable experience as a journey-level painter, including painting exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures, equipment, roadways, and airfields.
• Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license.
• May require six (6) months of verifiable experience in painting Airfields, highways, and/or roadways.
• May require the ability to maintain a California Lead Worker Certification.
• Applicants must be insurable and maintain insurability under the department’s automobile liability insurance policy.
• Must pass a written multiple-choice examination.
• Must undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment for airport positions.
• Must be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area.
• Must submit an application for, successfully acquire, and maintain a Customs Access Seal for airport positions.
• Must be qualified for unescorted access to the Port’s Maritime Transportation System (MTS) for port positions.
• Must submit an application for, successfully acquire, and maintain a TWIC card for port positions.
• May be disqualified based on conviction history under California Public Resources Code 5164 for Recreation and Park Department positions.
• Must successfully pass a medical examination.
• May be required to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.

• Knowledge of the practices, procedures, and techniques of the painter's trade.
• Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of tools, equipment, and materials of the trade.
• Knowledge of properties of various types of paint and their applications.
• Ability to mix, match, and harmonize colors.
• Knowledge of painting safety practices, including rigging and use of scaffolds.
• Basic arithmetic and measurements.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and document actions.
• Ability to follow and understand written instructions.
• Ability to use a computer.
