About the Role
The Legal Services Division at the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) provides essential legal services supporting the organization’s regulatory role. The team plays a critical role in supporting and advising on regulatory responses and sector governance, corporate and administrative law, tribunal and court proceedings, legal documentation, compliance matters, contract drafting, legislative developments, and policy initiatives. We are looking for a Senior Law Clerk to join our team and make a meaningful impact.
Responsibilities
- Prepare legal documentation and provide legal support services leveraging superior written communication and organizational skills.
- Provide administrative and clerical support services to Counsel.
- Provide detailed and technical information internally and to the public and licensees/registrants, including as related to status of matters.
- Review files at each stage of compliance and eligibility processes to ensure completeness and accuracy, requesting additional materials as required.
- Prepare documentation for hearings, appeals, and judicial review applications consistent with applicable rules of practice or procedure.
- Apply legislation to extract information from reports and applications and draft the initial copy of relevant documentation.
- Maintain files in an orderly manner consistent with Division practices.
- Monitor file status and prepare monthly statistics and reports tracking files, including numbers and status.
- Proactively identify and alert counsel to issues and potential risks, including as related to timelines, service, and communications.
Requirements
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Law Clerk, preferably in a regulatory environment.
- Completion of a post-secondary Law Clerk program, or ILCO Certification.
- Superior writing skills including the ability to compile information from files to draft documentation.
- Research abilities required to find relevant cases and supporting records.
- Ability to work within strict time constraints while maintaining a high volume of work.
- Ability to meet constant deadlines by working both independently and collaboratively in a highly engaged team environment.
- Detail orientation with strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Working knowledge of legal terminology and phraseology to prepare legal documents.
- Familiarity with the application of various pieces of legislation (i.e. Liquor Licence and Control Act, Gaming Control Act, Horse Racing Licence Act, Cannabis Licence Act, Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code).
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with an ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders (i.e. AGCO staff, police, court office employees and the public).
- Advanced computer skills using various MS Office Suite Programs, and experience using Quick Law, West Law and Canlii.
- Must be eligible to work in Canada.
- Will be subject to a criminal background check.
