About the Role
This role is for a Senior QA Engineer focused on Performance & Scalability, responsible for owning performance across the platform, microservices, and event-driven flows. The position requires proactive performance management, defining thresholds, and identifying degradation issues.
Responsibilities
- Own performance from day one, embedding performance thinking into the delivery plan before code is written.
- Make performance testing a natural part of how teams build and ship, not a gate they hit at the end.
- Own the thresholds, metrics, and SLOs that govern pass or fail.
- Decide what a breach means, set budgets (latency, error rate, throughput), and make signals objective enough for pipeline action.
- Design and build performance tests for individual services, stubbing downstream and third-party dependencies.
- Map load to real production traffic to find where things bend and break.
- Integrate performance testing into CI/CD to catch regressions automatically, early, and fast.
- Own fail-fast signals and keep them trustworthy.
- Build performance tests as code, reusable components, templates, and utilities that scale across teams and services.
- Handle data seeding and test setup for repeatable and realistic runs.
- Root-cause regressions across the stack, reading logs and tracing requests through distributed systems.
- Engage stakeholders (engineering, platform, product) to turn findings into fixes and drive outcomes.
- Raise performance and scalability risks early, challenge assumptions constructively, and influence decisions.
- Say when a design won't scale before it ships.
Requirements
- 5+ years in performance engineering with a track record of owning performance across complex, modern systems.
- Deep performance testing expertise, including designing realistic load models, running load, stress, soak, and spike tests, and interpreting results.
- Hands-on depth with k6 for building and running performance tests.
- Comfort with monitoring and observability tools like Datadog, Grafana, CloudWatch, and using them proactively.
- Strong programming ability in at least one language (TypeScript preferred).
- Understanding of microservices and distributed systems, including service-oriented architectures, dependencies, and testing services in isolation.
- CI/CD fluency, with experience integrating performance testing into pipelines and keeping feedback fast and signals reliable.
- Experience with AWS infrastructure is strongly preferred.
- Strong communication and presence, participating fully in agile ceremonies and cross-team conversations.
- Experience in fintech, wealth management, or regulated financial services is a plus.
- Experience using AI-assisted tooling to accelerate performance work is a plus.
- Contributions to internal quality guilds, communities of practice, or engineering culture initiatives is a plus.
- Experience mentoring engineers on performance and testing best practices is a plus.
- Operates with ownership and independence, proactively improving coverage, tests, and dashboards.
- Treats the Wealth Management experience line as their own and holds themselves to high standards.
- Acts as a quality enabler, making teams better at shipping reliable software.
