About the Role
Alto Software Group is seeking an experienced Data Platform Engineering Manager to lead a team of three engineers. This role involves a 50/50 split between hands-on engineering and people/delivery management, focusing on scaling the data lakehouse, delivering infrastructure for data commercialisation, and building reusable data components.
Responsibilities
- Recruit, guide, and nurture a diverse data platform engineering team.
- Collaborate with peers, the Technical Product Manager, and Head of Platform & Data Engineering to expand the data platform engineering function.
- Guide, advise, and coach data platform engineers through one-on-one meetings, objective setting, and feedback.
- Partner with the Technical Product Manager to shape the roadmap and prioritize effectively.
- Write Python and Terraform, design systems, review code, and ship platform capabilities.
- Take ownership of delivery from design through deployment.
- Collaborate with product, commercial, and engineering teams to translate business problems into data solutions.
- Contribute to modernizing data infrastructure, including data extraction, retention policies, and migration to modern SQL frameworks.
- Ensure the data platform is resilient, performant, and ready for future needs.
Requirements
- Senior data or platform engineer with strong Python skills.
- Track record of building data platform infrastructure for engineers and analysts.
- Hands-on experience with AWS and Terraform.
- Comfort with infrastructure-as-code.
- Experience with a modern lakehouse or warehouse platform (Databricks, Snowflake, or BigQuery).
- Experience with data ingestion and transformation tools (Fivetran/DBT).
- Familiarity with Kafka or similar streaming systems.
- Solid SQL skills and data modelling sense.
- Awareness of container orchestration (ECS, Kubernetes).
- Experience managing software engineers, including hiring, performance management, coaching, and career development.
- Appetite for staying technical and hands-on engineering.
- Capable of leading technical discussions and overseeing performance/delivery.
- Comfortable engaging directly with internal customers and stakeholders.
- Drive effective communication, including asynchronous communication via documentation (ADRs).
- Accustomed to operating with significant alignment and independence.
- Possess a platform mindset, taking pride in building tools that help other engineers.
