About the Role
9 Mothers is building AI-powered counter-drone systems to intercept and neutralize Group 1/sUAS threats. This role is crucial for establishing and scaling the company's procurement processes as it transitions from prototype to production. You will be the first dedicated buyer, owning end-to-end procurement and building the foundational purchasing systems.
Responsibilities
- Source and purchase the full robotics bill of materials, including custom electronics, machined parts, actuators, cables, and cameras.
- Locate hard-to-find and allocated electronics, such as NVIDIA Jetson modules and GPUs, through various channels while managing risks.
- Manage the quote-to-PO cycle, including soliciting quotes, negotiating terms, placing orders, and tracking deliveries.
- Own vendor selection, ensuring compliance with trade restrictions by building and maintaining a non-Chinese supply base with a preference for US vendors.
- Define and implement purchasing processes, including PO workflows, vendor onboarding, receiving, and spend tracking.
- Select and implement purchasing tools, potentially including an ERP/MRP system.
- Build and maintain the approved vendor list and collaborate with engineering on part data.
- Provide visibility into spend, open orders, and lead-time risks.
- Transition the supply base for production purchasing, including qualifying vendors for volume, establishing second sources, and negotiating pricing.
- Plan procurement against production schedules to ensure timely delivery of long-lead and allocation-risk items.
- Collaborate with engineering on Bill of Materials (BOM) health for production, including component lifecycle and cost-down opportunities.
- Procure within ITAR constraints and maintain necessary documentation.
- Screen the supply chain against prohibited-source requirements and ensure Chinese-origin content is excluded.
- Protect against counterfeit components by prioritizing authorized channels and implementing rigorous vetting for secondary market purchases.
Requirements
- 5+ years of procurement/purchasing experience for physical hardware products in robotics, defense, aerospace, automotive, or similar electromechanical systems.
- Proven ability to source scarce and allocated electronics.
- Experience buying custom PCB assemblies, machined metal parts, actuators/motors, cable assemblies, and cameras or sensors.
- Experience supporting a product transition from prototype/low-volume to production purchasing.
- Track record of building or substantially defining purchasing processes.
- Self-sufficient and able to set priorities and close loops independently.
- Strong negotiation skills with vendors.
- US person (citizen or lawful permanent resident) for ITAR compliance.
