About the Role

The Asylum Seekers and Displaced People team is a new service supporting displaced individuals in Croydon. This role is crucial in coordinating the Council's response to support those arriving through visa or resettlement schemes, or accommodated in Home Office accommodation. The work involves supporting babies, children, young people, families, and vulnerable adults, ensuring they are aware of available services and that safeguarding is prioritized.

Responsibilities

  • Complete comprehensive assessments of need, utilizing interpretation services where necessary.
  • Assist individuals and families in finding and accessing support and advice through practical case support.
  • Develop professional relationships with residents at allocated Home Office accommodation sites through regular attendance.
  • Ensure residents are aware of available services and that safeguarding is considered during every visit.
  • Support babies, children, young people, families, and vulnerable adults residing in Home Office accommodation.
  • Assist families who have come to live in Croydon through resettlement schemes and the Homes for Ukraine Programme.
  • Address how a partnership approach can support displaced people in all work undertaken.
  • Contribute to the development of new services or ways of working.
  • Break down barriers where resistance exists.
  • Be solution-focused in approach.
  • Work independently and directly with displaced people in various environments, including their homes (hotel or hostel accommodation).
  • Work outside of 'core' working hours when necessary.
  • Be reflective and evaluate learning needs.
  • Actively seek learning opportunities to improve practice and service outcomes.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality boundaries.

Requirements

  • Significant experience in a relevant field such as Social Work, Teaching, Psychology, Psychotherapy, Youth Work, Counselling, Probation, Health Professions, Education, or Early Years.
  • Knowledge and understanding of recent research and evidence-based practice for resettling displaced adults, children, and young people seeking safety through legal routes, and asylum seekers supported by the Home Office.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based approaches for direct and intensive work with displaced people.
  • Knowledge of research and evidence base regarding factors affecting displaced people and their families.
  • Experience making a significant contribution to the development of new services or ways of working.
  • Experience breaking down barriers where there is resistance.
  • Experience being solution-focused.
  • Ability to work independently and directly with displaced people in a range of environments, including their homes (hotel or hostel accommodation).
  • Ability to work outside 'core' working hours.
  • Ability to be reflective and evaluate learning needs.
  • Ability to actively seek learning opportunities that improve practice and impact service outcomes.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality boundaries.
  • Evidence of substantial experience working directly with displaced people or other marginalized groups in various settings and communities.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, including those who may not have previously accessed services.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults.
