About the Role
This role involves prototyping, implementing, and evaluating optical techniques to enhance the resolution and robustness of 3D optical interferometry for experimental elastohydrodynamics. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team, taking ownership of scoping, managing, and executing their project, which is expected to be both interesting and rewarding with exciting technical challenges.
Responsibilities
- Prototype, implement, and evaluate optical techniques for 3D optical interferometry.
- Scope, manage, and execute a research and development project.
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team of experienced engineers and technicians.
Requirements
- Performed well in A-level (or equivalent) Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Physics.
- Studying for a degree in Physics, Engineering, Robotics, Applied Mathematics, or similar.
- Working knowledge of mechanical design principles.
- Familiarity with key second-year undergraduate mathematical concepts including complex analysis, Fourier theory, linear algebra, numerical methods, and calculus.
- Strong programming skills in Python, C++, or C#.
- Ability to think critically and question the status quo.
- Ability to study independently with support from the R&D team.
- Resilience to navigate the nonlinear nature of research and development.
- Clear communication skills in person, informal writing, and technical writing.
- Interest in the project and ability to rise to a technical challenge.
- Availability to work full-time from October 2026 to September 2027 (approximate, negotiable dates).
