About the Role

This role supports Global Reserving at Markel by delivering reserving analysis, reporting, and transformation initiatives, leveraging actuarial expertise, data analytics, and process improvement to enhance reserve insights, operational efficiency, and strategic decision-making across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to quarterly reserve close, reporting, and Reserve Committee materials
  • Participate as needed in ResQ/MRD development, support, and testing
  • Assist in development and implementation of embedded margin roll-off methodologies
  • Support and maintain initiatives to standardize and streamline reserving processes across Markel
  • Assist in ERMS-based reserving enhancements, including MIICL/MISE solutions and data integration
  • Contribute to simplification of reserving data structures and workflows (ResQ/MRD)
  • Perform reserve reviews and monitoring, including adequacy, AvE, and embedded margin analysis
  • Support development and maintenance of reserving tools and analytics (e.g., AvE, reserve performance tracking) that support visualization and communication
  • Utilize actuarial and data tools including but not limited to ResQ, Excel, MRD, SQL, Python, & Alteryx
  • Effectively communicating findings to Actuarial, Finance, Claims, Underwriting, and Executive Leadership, presenting analyses clearly and responding promptly to additional requests
  • Support IBNR uploads, pre-close processes, and ERMS/Claims Centre initiatives
  • Contribute to centralization of reserving activities and reduction of product-actuary dependency
  • Provide support to broader global reserving (e.g., P&S, W&S, International) as needed
  • Identify and support opportunities to improve efficiency through automation and AI
  • Contribute to scalable solutions that enhance actuarial workflows and data quality
  • Representing the Department on cross-functional teams
  • Other actuarial work and Ad hoc requests from product line leaders and executive leadership

Requirements

  • Degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Credentialed member of an internationally recognized actuarial association (for example CAS or IFoA)
  • Proven actuarial experience, ideally in reserving or financial reporting
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to translate technical findings into practical business insights
  • Experience with actuarial and data tools (ResQ, Excel, MRD; SQL/Python/Alteryx preferred)
