About the Role
The Housing Support Worker provides tenant-centered services to improve mental health, housing stability, and unit conditions while fostering a harmonious community. This role utilizes mental health recovery and harm reduction principles, working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to support individuals experiencing poverty, homelessness, or precarious housing.
Responsibilities
- Assess tenant needs and provide coaching, practical support, or referrals.
- Provide informal counseling on mental health, addiction, life skills, and food security.
- Advocate for tenant rights and benefits.
- Prevent and de-escalate crises and conduct wellness checks.
- Collaborate with internal departments and external service providers for system navigation.
- Facilitate unit viewings, move-ins, and tenant orientations.
- Develop individualized action plans using mental health recovery principles.
- Assist with income verification and rent administration.
- Provide eviction prevention support and address tenancy issues.
- Inspect housing units and safety equipment.
- Act as a landlord representative and witness at Landlord and Tenant Board hearings.
- Organize and facilitate community events and group activities.
- Maintain accurate documentation in information databases.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies and provide on-call support.
- Participate in supervision meetings and organizational committees.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in Social Work, Social Services, or related fields.
- Minimum 3 years of experience serving people living in poverty, experiencing homelessness, or with mental health and addiction issues.
- Ability to travel to housing sites and community service facilities.
- Ability to perform light housekeeping duties.
- Ability to lift, move, and store objects up to 20lbs.
- Ability to work flexible hours including on-call, evenings, and weekends.
- Successful police record check.
