About the Role
Develop and implement waste management and recycling programs in City office workplaces, promote awareness of waste diversion and recycling initiatives, and ensure adherence to applicable legislation and regulation and Council's waste diversion targets.
Responsibilities
- Prepare policies and guidelines for waste management programs aimed at promoting waste diversion and energy reduction activities throughout City facilities.
- Ensure major City Corporate Real Estate Management (CREM) managed workplaces have active waste diversion programs and monitor recycling to ensure correct diversion.
- Liaise with Environment, Climate & Forestry to update corporate-wide initiatives and identify areas of potential waste diversion in CREM managed facilities.
- Liaise with senior CREM management to ensure waste diversion plans align with the division's strategic direction and meet Council's objectives.
- Liaise with One FM staff, private contractors, and Solid Waste Management to ensure efficiencies in waste management and recycling programs.
- Coordinate the City's "Green Bin" program in CREM facilities.
- Assist Divisions, Agencies, and Corporations to meet Transform TO and Council's waste diversion targets through program implementation.
- Update waste diversion plans for CREM in keeping with Council's waste diversion policy.
- Administer contracts for CREM and 14 Divisions to ensure the collection and disposal of confidential documents.
- Liaise with the Purchasing department (PMMD) to prepare contract documents.
- Coordinate waste audits in CREM facilities and work with PMMD to initiate and award Contracts.
- Coordinate and arrange the disposal of hazardous and controlled wastes.
- Provide expert advice to CREM, Divisions, Agencies, and Corporations with respect to waste diversion in the workplace.
- Work with Stakeholders to ensure waste management programs are installed in new buildings.
- Liaise with Solid Waste Management Services to arrange collection schedules for Clients.
- Initiate communications to promote awareness of waste management and recycling programs to City staff.
- Create and update written material posted on the CREM - PMO intranet site and liaise with strategic communications staff regarding content design.
- Provide written responses to inquiries from City staff and the public regarding waste management issues.
- Promote waste management through "Earth Week" and "Waste Reduction Week" via daily email messages to City staff.
- Provide Waste Diversion Subject Matter Expert advice to Project Managers in CREM to ensure Construction & Demolition Waste Diversion Guidelines are followed for compliance with Ontario Regulations.
Requirements
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related discipline or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Considerable experience in waste diversion and recycling programs, policies, and procedures.
- Considerable experience in coordinating and arranging the disposal of hazardous and controlled wastes.
- Considerable experience with the application of the EPA, OHSA, and RPRA related to waste diversion, hazardous, and controlled waste.
- Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class "G" Driver's License.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience using various database systems such as SAP and CADD.
- Strong understanding of invoicing, contract management, and preparation of Tender documents.
- Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and represent the Division in various situations.
