About the Role

Provide a wide range of engineering support services to ensure the technical soundness, reliability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of the utility and its Electrical Distribution Power System. This includes developing standards and specifications, participating in strategic planning, preparing reports and studies, and demonstrating effective project management.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare material and/or technical specifications and standards.
  • Review proposals from suppliers, contractors, and consultants for technical merit and compliance.
  • Investigate and evaluate the application of new technologies.
  • Compare alternatives based on cost/benefit considerations, customer needs, safety, statistical analysis, and engineering principles, and recommend the optimum solution.
  • Approve equipment/material for use in Toronto Hydro systems based on test reports, drawings, technical data, and quality records.
  • Prepare technical training documents and contribute to Standard Practice and Standard Design Practice document creation/update.
  • Act as a change agent for the adoption and continual use of standards across the organization in design and construction stages.
  • Prepare engineering, technical, or business reports and studies; perform analysis, testing, and evaluations.
  • Provide timely technical support and consultation, demonstrate effective project management and process efficiencies.
  • Review, develop, and/or present business proposals, plans, designs, processes, operational procedures, and practices.
  • Represent Toronto Hydro in external meetings and/or committees.
  • May be called upon to act as a team or project leader.
  • Develop and maintain Quality Assurance processes within Toronto Hydro, ensuring quality issues are effectively prioritized and analyzed.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and investigations on equipment failures, material or process quality issues and identify preventative actions.
  • Facilitate discussions to resolve issues arising from equipment failures, material or process quality issues, acting as a liaison between internal and external stakeholders.
  • Recommend changes to existing standards (from investigation outcomes) and/or to capital or maintenance programs to improve quality and/or compliance.
  • Collaborate with external suppliers, such as manufacturers and distributors, to ensure quality issues are resolved and actions are taken to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Maintain internal databases and develop various reports as requested by internal groups or Management.
  • Resolve concerns or gaps identified through internal and/or external audits.
  • Collaborate with various internal departments to streamline and improve compliance and quality assurance related activities.
  • Participate on internal committees and project teams as required on a wide variety of business initiatives.
  • Support Senior Management on ad hoc assignments arising from various external committees.
  • Participate in special investigations and studies, and prepare reports with findings and recommendations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of Engineering experience, preferably in the utilities or manufacturing industry.
  • Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario.
  • Class “G” Drivers License strongly preferred.
  • Experience in design and specification development of electrical distribution equipment.
  • Experience with development and application of utility standards for underground and overhead electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience with grid automation, SCADA/DMS systems and protection & control systems.
  • Fluent in the application of information technology, such as general office software, CADD, engineering records.
  • Experience in the use of engineering application software including CYME.

  • Proven effective problem-solving and analytical ability.
  • Ability to predict and understand technological trends and their effect on business or strategic work plans.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred).
  • Minimum 5+ years of Engineering experience.
  • Must have a valid Class G Drivers License.
  • Extensive experience of communicating with stakeholders on complex, technical issues is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance and Quality Management Systems is an asset.
  • Experience with performing root cause analysis and document findings, corrective and preventive actions in an engineering report format.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills demonstrated through report writing and delivering presentations.
  • Fluent in the application of information technology, such as MS Office, data analysis software and database applications.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to bring projects in on time and on budget.
  • Ability to adapt and work effectively through a variety of situations, collaborating with various individuals and groups, and willing to challenge the status quo.
  • Self-motivated, operates with a high degree of independence and can visualize opportunities for change in support of continuous process improvement.
  • Demonstrates versatile leadership; encourages organizational teamwork and collaboration, and takes educated risks to develop innovative solutions.
  • Builds strong relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Engage with execution, operation groups, warehouse staff and contractors as part of the equipment failure root cause analysis phase.
