About the Role

Join The Australian Financial Review as a Markets Reporter to deliver lively, accurate, and agenda-setting coverage across equities, bonds, currencies, commodities, and crypto. This role offers the opportunity to report breaking news, cultivate industry contacts, and produce compelling journalism for a highly engaged audience.

Responsibilities

  • Drive and maintain the AFR Markets Live blog, ensuring up-to-date, accurate, and engaging coverage during ASX trading hours.
  • Coordinate and write breaking news posts to drive digital traffic, responding rapidly to global market-moving events.
  • Write a rolling sharemarket report for the print edition and produce in-depth research, interviews, and long-form articles.
  • Generate original story pitches and ideas that expand newsroom coverage across business, markets, and the broader economy.
  • Cultivate and maintain a strong network of contacts across financial markets to break exclusive news stories.
  • Collaborate closely with newsroom editors and journalists on overarching coverage plans and key projects.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a financial journalist with an ability to break news.
  • An understanding of global financial markets, major asset classes, and key investor themes.
  • Strong writing skills across breaking news, feature reporting, and digital formats.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate original story ideas and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative, team-first mindset in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
  • Must have the right to lawfully work and live in Australia.
