About the Role
We are seeking a Founding Manufacturing Engineer to be instrumental in transforming Gradient Robotics' designs into hardware. This is a hands-on role where you will manage the machine shop end-to-end, collaborating with engineers on high-leverage tasks. You will be responsible for producing precision parts, optimizing the manufacturing process, and ensuring rapid iteration for the engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain metal manufacturing equipment, including drill press, CNC router, CNC mill, sheet metal brake, and band saw.
- Manage CAM and workholding, utilizing Fusion 360, designing fixtures and soft jaws, and achieving aerospace-style tolerances on aluminum and steel parts.
- Provide design feedback to the engineering team to improve Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA), and assist in designing parts that are faster and cheaper to produce.
- Oversee outsourced machining by managing external vendors for complex geometries, ensuring the in-house shop focuses on critical-path work.
- Develop repeatable processes for common parts to minimize rework and document setups, fixtures, and tooling to avoid redundant efforts.
Requirements
- Hands-on CNC machining experience (3-axis minimum; multi-axis preferred).
- Strong intuition for CAM and feeds-and-speeds for aluminum and steel.
- Experience with metrology (CMM, height gauge, etc.) and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- A commitment to finishing tasks, ensuring all parts meet specifications, are not lost, and deadlines are met.
- A systems-oriented approach, with an instinct to fixture, template, or document processes after initial completion.
- Ability to work on-site in San Francisco 5 days per week, with flexibility for 6 days per week during crunch times, embedded within the team.
