About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to own the design and shipment of precision hardware. This role involves end-to-end ownership of a core mechanical subsystem, collaborating with the engineering team on high-leverage tasks. You will guide systems from initial concept through fabrication and assembly, experiencing significant impact as your designs become integral to scaling AI infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Own a core mechanical subsystem end to end, including design, hand calculations, FEA, fabrication, assembly, and validation.
  • Own precision motion and structural design, focusing on linear stages, actuators, bearings, and drivetrains built to tight tolerances under significant loads and moments.
  • Drive design decisions using first-principles analysis and trade studies across materials, stiffness, precision grade, and load paths.
  • Leverage in-house machine shop and technician team for rapid design manufacturing.
  • Integrate mechanical designs with controls, firmware, and software at the system level.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience designing precision electromechanical systems that have shipped or been deployed.
  • Deep competence in structural and precision design, including ball screws, rack-and-pinion, bearings, kinematic constraint, and tolerance stack-ups.
  • Strong proficiency in FEA and hand calculations, with an emphasis on validating simulations.
  • Proven track record of owning subsystems end-to-end in a fast-moving hardware company (robotics, aerospace, automotive, or similar).
  • Comfort with ambiguity and a strong build-and-test instinct.
  • Hands-on machining experience.
  • Ability to work on-site in San Francisco 5 days per week, with potential for 6 days per week during crunch times.
