About the Role

We are seeking an organized, motivated, and enthusiastic individual to join our Behavioral and Social Sciences journals team as a Publishing Assistant. You will provide vital administrative and project management support for approximately 50 Springer journal titles, offering best-in-class service to key thought leaders. This role is essential to the smooth running and growth of the journal portfolios and is an excellent opportunity for an early-career professional to learn scholarly and scientific publishing.

Responsibilities

  • Understand publishing workflows and contribute to journals meeting annual targets for submissions, publications, and turnaround times.
  • Provide foundational support for journal portfolios, including preparing contracts, monitoring and requesting payments, and maintaining accurate internal records.
  • Deliver timely, accurate, and professional communication to Editors-in-Chief, Editorial Board members, society partners, authors, and reviewers.
  • Prepare materials for team reports, conferences, and board meetings using PowerPoint, Looker, and internal databases.
  • Participate in the communication and management of publishing policies and protocols, including plagiarism detection, AI-use guidance, open access policies, and publication ethics initiatives.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues across marketing, production, peer review management, finance, customer service, and other departments.
  • Monitor portfolio performance metrics and support financial processes, applying developing financial acumen.
  • Liaise with Editorial Assistants and publishing colleagues across divisions to share best practices and identify opportunities for workflow improvements.
  • Adapt effectively to changing priorities, industry developments, and evolving publishing standards.
  • Contribute to cross-departmental projects and initiatives related to publication ethics, data transparency, open access policies, and other industry developments.
  • Support the team in managing urgent issues and escalations, remaining calm and solutions-oriented under pressure.
  • Evaluate and navigate multiple priorities, stakeholders, and publishing processes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Maintain a positive and professional approach when facing challenges, setbacks, or competing demands.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; a degree in a related field is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong numerical and analytical abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Looker.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal awareness, with the ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to demonstrate adaptability and thrive in a dynamic environment with changing priorities.
  • Displays resilience and professionalism when working through challenges, deadlines, and competing demands.
  • Developing financial acumen, with the ability to understand financial processes, payment tracking, and business performance metrics.

  • Previous experience in an office environment or academic publishing is a plus.
