About the Role
Discord is seeking a Manager to lead the Scaled Abuse Countermeasures and Research (SCAR) team, which acts as the primary defense against scaled abuse. This role offers the chance to redefine the team's strategy, establish a structured research program, and implement ML and AI-powered automation to replace manual processes. The position reports to the Director of Safety Automation.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow the SCAR team, responsible for defending against scaled abuse threats.
- Set a vision for the team focused on automation and ML-driven detection.
- Build AI-powered incident response workflows to increase team leverage.
- Define scaled abuse metrics and develop a roadmap for prioritization.
- Establish a research program for systematic investigation of attacker operations.
- Ensure SCAR's signals feed into Safety ML models and pipeline upgrades.
- Partner cross-functionally with Product, Safety ML, Data Science, Policy, Legal, Trust & Safety, and Revenue.
- Coach, hire, and grow Scaled Abuse Scientists.
- Communicate attacker dynamics and incentives to senior leadership.
Requirements
- 2+ years of people management experience leading technical teams (engineers, ML engineers, data scientists, or applied researchers) or equivalent leadership experience.
- 4+ years of experience in Trust & Safety, fraud, anti-abuse, or a similar adversarial domain at a consumer-scale platform.
- Demonstrated ability to drive ML and automation adoption in a Trust & Safety or operations context.
- Strong analytical skills and fluency in SQL and Python for data investigation.
- Ability to apply first principles and behavioral-economics reasoning to adversarial systems.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
