About the Role

Chelsea Piers is looking to hire a Building Engineer to support our growing business. You will be part of the hard working and dedicated team that keeps our businesses operating smoothly. In this role, you will be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving maintenance and mechanical issues across the Chelsea Piers property. This role reports to the Chief Engineer. This is a non-union job.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all facility equipment and physical structures are in excellent condition, adhering to safety and operational standards.
  • Manage the operation and maintenance of principal mechanical equipment such as pools, steam rooms, saunas, hot yoga rooms, HVAC systems, and elevators.
  • Oversee daily facility operations, including maintenance tasks and facility-side activities to ensure smooth operation.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for crisis and issue management, ensuring swift resolution and minimal disruption to operations.
  • Manage MEP vendors and service contracts, ensuring adherence to budget constraints while maintaining high-quality service delivery.
  • Supervise maintenance technicians to ensure task lists and general cleaning schedules are adhered to efficiently.
  • Manage and build project task lists, coordinating with maintenance staff to schedule work orders and ensure timely completion.
  • Utilize staff, service contracts, and emergency contact lists to rectify urgent repairs promptly and effectively.
  • Ensure all areas of the facility meet safety standards and operate smoothly, conducting regular inspections and implementing necessary improvements.
  • Provide comprehensive Daily Activity Reports on mechanical issues and activities to the Chief Engineer.
  • Manage relationships with vendors and contractors, ensuring services are delivered according to agreed terms and resolving any issues promptly.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of commercial HVAC experience, including troubleshooting and repair of chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air handlers, RTUs, VAV systems, and hydronic heating/cooling systems.
  • Proficiency with BAS/BMS controls and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Strong HVAC diagnostics and performance optimization skills; able to independently identify and resolve issues (hands-on, not just oversight).
  • Experience maintaining large, occupied facilities.
  • Solid understanding of building systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC) and ability to read technical plans.
  • Must obtain/maintain Certified Pool Operator (CPO), EPA 608, and FDNY Fire Guard/Certificate of Fitness certifications.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Creative problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexible availability, including weekends, holidays, and early morning/midday/late evening shifts.
