About the Role

The core responsibility of the Residential Aide (RA) includes the continued assurance of support and care to clients residing in the shelter. Under the general direction of the Shift Supervisor, the RA provides direct assistance, support, and care to clients, while also supporting and enforcing facility rules.

Responsibilities

  • Complete new resident intake arrival packets, exit logs, and daily occupancy forms.
  • Utilize the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) Client Assistance and Rehousing Enterprise Systems (CARES) for intake check-in and discharge conditional intake.
  • Review nightly attendance roster and incident reports.
  • Receive food deliveries, confirm items received against receipts for accuracy, and report inconsistencies to the Shift Supervisor and Director of Program Operations.
  • Distribute meals to residents and dispose of expired food items according to DHS guidelines.
  • Monitor logs to ensure clients sign the Daily Attendance Roster upon entering and exiting the facility.
  • Provide clients access to rooms and assist with room transfers/swaps.
  • Collect trash from the office and dispose of it in designated areas.
  • Distribute DHS notices (e.g., 4002 notices, appointment slips, mail) to residents.
  • Adhere to DHS housekeeping mandates by cleaning the office space, microwave, refrigerator, and bathroom at the end of each shift.
  • Bag and tag client personal belongings as needed, and report room cleaning and repair needs to the Shift Supervisor.
  • Collaborate with the on-site Shift Supervisor to ensure a safe environment for all staff and clients.
  • Conduct hourly rounds of the facility to ensure all room doors are secured and clients' personal belongings are secure.
  • Conduct safety checks of clients staying in the facility due to illness or mobility issues, ensuring clients are responsive.
  • Immediately alert medical staff and immediate supervisor of clients found in distress.
  • Rotate shifts at the discretion of the DPO to meet program needs.
  • Conduct operation unit inspections during the new intake process.
  • Maintain all logs (Attendance, ACS, emergency contacts, sign in/out logbook) and submit them on the 1st of every month to the Director of Operations.
  • Create a dead file of all logs on the 1st of every month for submission for storage.
  • Adhere to the dress code policy for uniformed personnel and maintain a clean, neat, and professional appearance.
  • Review all paperwork and logs completed during the previous shift with the Shift Supervisor before the end of the tour.
  • Physically check all unoccupied rooms to determine their status (readiness, repairs, and cleaning needs).
  • Ensure all clean and ready units have clean linens and towels, and alert the maintenance team of needed items.
  • Complete and submit all required paperwork (daily occupancy, exit logs, meal census, NSR, new intake, curfew violations, incidents, etc.).
  • Serve breakfast (8:00 am - 10:00 am), lunch (12:00 pm - 2:00 pm), and dinner (6:00 pm - 8:00 pm).
  • Finalize Night Signature Roster (NSR) in CARES.
  • Ensure new logs for the month are in place.
  • Receive and log incoming meals (usually at 6:00 am).
  • Deliver mail on the 8:00 am to 4:00 pm shift.
  • Clock in using the time clock system and sign in via the onsite logbook.
  • Be available for overtime when business needs require.
  • Physically check all unoccupied units to determine status (ready, repairs needed, needs cleaning).
  • Work additional shifts to ensure coverage when staff are out of the office for various reasons.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have and maintain a valid NYS security license.
  • Two years of experience in Single Adult Shelters and/or Congregate Residential Services.
  • Experience working with families / homeless population.
  • Food Protection Certification and CPR/First Aid required.
  • Must complete a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Must have incredible initiative.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team to complete complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Intermediate level of computer proficiency with proficiency in Word, Excel, and the ability to learn new technologies and databases.
  • May be required to work long hours and a varied schedule to meet job demands and deadlines.
  • Periodically may bend, lift, and carry objects weighing up to seventy-five pounds.
