About the Role

The Defender Association of Philadelphia is seeking a skilled Data Analyst to support the Police Accountability Unit (PAU) by providing comprehensive data analysis and reports. The role involves compiling and analyzing policing data in Philadelphia, converting complex datasets into actionable insights for informed, data-driven decisions through quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Compile and summarize statistical information for internal reports, grant proposals, and external communications.
  • Collaborate with experts in criminology, sociology, and data science on data projects.
  • Collect, interpret, and analyze internal and external data to inform client representation, policy decisions, and public commentary.
  • Critically review aggregate policing data alongside current events and policy changes to investigate trends and guide courtroom strategy.
  • Develop statistical reports as exhibits in criminal cases and testify to findings in court.
  • Build data pipelines to extract, clean, transform, and report on datasets.
  • Create and manage organizational systems for accessible data analysis.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders to ensure data governance compliance.
  • Provide statistical commentary on external reports and publications.
  • Support other Defender units with statistical analysis as needed.

Requirements

  • Proficient in a statistical data analysis program such as R, Python, or SPSS.
  • Experience managing data and building data pipelines to generate reports.
  • Experience with data visualization software, such as Tableau.
  • Familiarity with querying SQL databases.
  • Minimum of one year work experience in data analysis in an academic or professional setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in all phases of research and analysis.
  • Experience with statistical methods, such as linear regressions.
  • Curiosity and self-motivation to expand analyses and stay informed about new methodologies.
  • Ability to work well with others and handle multiple tasks.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and explain data processes and results to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to and understanding of client confidentiality.
  • Desire to provide better representation for Defender clients.
